(en) Haiti, Just how far will this protectorate government go? by Yannick Etienne - Batay Ouvriye*

Last week, while we were demanding the Ministry of Social Affairs to mediate the
payment of the severance pay a capitalist owed a group of workers, a ministry
gang attacked us; two of our comrades were illegally arrested, and spent a week
in jail. ---- We already denounced, last month, the Police’s refusal to allow us
to march, and even on MayDay, we were forced through immense red tape before
eventually being able to take to the streets. Last week, while we were demanding
the Ministry of Social Affairs to mediate the payment of the severance pay a
capitalist owed a group of workers, a ministry gang attacked us; two of our
comrades were illegally arrested, and spent a week in jail. Following a wave of
protests and demonstrations, they were released. Today, again, our democratic
rights are being undermined.
Now: yes, the President of Brazil, Ignacio Lula da Silva, will in Haiti on
Wednesday May 28, 2008 to visit his occupation troops and the Haitian President,
Rene Preval as well.
As Batay Ouvriye opposes these troops’ presence and the on-going exploitation
the imperialists allied with the Haitian bourgeoisie have decided to push down
our throats, a project which the occupation troops are here to ensure, we
prepared to organize a sit-in at the Palace entrance to inform Brazilian
president of our stand. The Police categorically refused us the permit to do so.
We suggested holding it a little further, on the central plaza’s main meeting
place (kiosk of the Champs de Mars), they again vehemently refused. We finally
suggested to hold the event, much further, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or
in front of the Brazilian embassy, but they again refused --- and this time,
with unveiled threats of repression !
We forcefully denounce this latest threat to silence our voice. This Press
Release is to alert the people of the forces of repression weighing upon all of
us who refuse to bow before the occupation forces
