you! ------ International protest camp of Nizhni-Novgorod anti-nuclear movement
against construction of a nuclear power plant 8th -18th of August 2008 in Nizhni 
Novgorod region of Russia Anti-nuclear movement of Nizhni-Novgorod was founded 
by environmental and local activists in  end of the year 2007, when it was 
announced that local authorities want to build a new nuclear power plant. 
Movement has already organised more than 10 anti-nuclear actions.

Goal of the camp is to inform public about plans to build a nuclear
power plant to Nizhni-Novgorod region and to create a mass movement of
local inhabitants against the construction. During work of the camp
lectures, trainings, movie screenings and protest actions are planned.
Goal of the camp is not only protest but also education of the
participants and local inhabitants.

Center of Nizhni Novgorod region is city of Nizhni Novgorod with 1.5
million inhabitants. Village of Uren is located 230 kilometers
North-East from Nizhni Novgorod, it is the local center with 30 000
inhabitants, surrounded with forest from every direction. This is where
famous Russian 19th-century writer Melnikov-Pecherskiy wrote his book
«In forests».

Background of the problem

Construction of new nuclear power in proximity of Uren is supposed to
start in 2009. Agreement on construction was signed in spring of year
2007 between administration of Nizhni Novgorod region and state
corporation «Rosatom».
  Last year president Putin also announced that during following 20 years
construction of 30 new Russian nuclear reactors is planned.

In G8 summit of year 2006 in St. Petersburg Putin signed a program for
utilization of nuclear waste from all around the world in Russia. There
is still no such technical methods for utilization of nuclear waste,
which are reasonable from economical point of view. In democratic
society, construction of objects such as new nuclear power plants should
be conducted according to opinion of the public.  In beginning of year
2008, 62% of the inhabitants of the Nizhni Novgorod announced that they
were against construction in an opinion poll organised by ROMIR.
  These are the reasons why Anti-nuclear Movement of Nizhni Novgorod was
organised and why it is calling for a protest camp.

No to new nuclear reactors!

and more detailed information. Participants should pay their travel to
city of Nizhni Novgorod, from Nizhni Novgorod to the camp there will be
buses organised.

Preliminary program of the protest camp:
7th of August — convergence of participators in Nizhni Novgorod
8th of August — beginning of the work of the camp, acquintance between
the participators
9th of August — seminar on nuclear energy in Russia and around the world
10th of August — seminar and discussion on political aspects of the
nuclear energy
11th of August — a training for participants of the protest actions
13th, 14th and 15th of August — preparation of protest action in village
of Uren, organisation of pickets, work with local inhabitants. A public
discussion in village of Uren for local inhabintants.
16th of August — a protest meeting in village of Uren
17th of August — final plenary meeting of the camp, evaluation
18th of August — closing of the camp
19th of August — a possible protest meeting in Nizhni Novgorod

More definite program of the camp will be announced in end of the May of
year 2008. If you are interested to participate, take with you a
sleeping bag, a tent if you have one, cutlery and hygienics. Food will
be provided for free to participants of the protest camp.
