(en) US, Miami Anarchist and Radical Studies (MARS) Group

Date Tue, 26 Jun 2007 15:01:45 +0300

Purpose of the Group ---- I feel there's a need and desire to start an Anarchist/Radical Studies group in Miami. I believe that this kind of group not only allows us to engage in more consistent and evolving discussions about Anarchist/anti-authoritarian theory, but will also aid us in developing more informed and innovative types of resistance. Part of my reason for wanting to develop such a group is to contribute to the furthering of anarchist/anti-authoritarian thought, but there are several other reasons, some of which I have already stated, why I would like to see such a group developed. I would also like to hear from others on this point. Though I'm particular interested in exploring and understanding different ideas andtheories in order to develop a more complete and nuance anarchist critique, I don't think this can be achieved by only reading texts written by anarchist or other fellow travelers. In other words, I want to read a diversity of material both within and outside of anarchism. Also, non-literary mediums can be used from time to time to keep give people a break, or just to keep things diverse

Structure of the Group

I envision this reading group structured in several ways. At times, I would like to structure it like a college course. Now before people start sighing and complaining, let me explain why I feel this structure would work best at times. With some reading, perhaps if the deal with a particular subject ( i.e. gentrification, the Situationists, etc), it would be best to look at several different texts to get a better understand of the subject at hand. This could be done, in say, 3-4 month blocks. Sometimes we may want to read a particular text for its own sake, and not necessarily as part of a course. In these cases, we could just read, get together, and discussed. So, depending on what we feel like doing, the group's structure can adapt accordingly.

Ideas for Texts

I would like for us to adopt the texts we plan on reading, or select the topics we wish to explore, at least a month in advance. I would like for these decisions to be made collectively. As our first text, we have decided to read Richard J.F. Day's Gramsci is Dead: Anarchist Currents in the Newest Social Movements, Pluto Press (London, ENG: 2005). I'm currently scanning the book, and will send that out as soon as it's done.

Discussion Group Meeting Dates

So far, we have decided to meet twice a month at the FireFly. We will meet on Thursday from 7-9 pm. Our first meeting is on 7/12/07. The next meeting for the month will be on 7/26/07.
