(en) US, Spokane, Wash. 18 Anarchists Arrested on the 4th of July

Date Thu, 05 Jul 2007 10:37:08 +0300

Washington - Today 18 anarchists and anti-authoritarians were arrested in Riverfront Park after marching peacefully against police brutality through downtown Spokane, Wa. ---- About 70 of us gathered by the river and had a jolly march to the park at around 5pm with signs and banners reading, "Those who hold power must be targeted", "Stop the violence!", "Disarm Authority" and many more.
We made it to the park and sat down to have our nice animal-free picnic (just like last year) and about 20 cops surrounded us and asked us to move a few feet away from a stage where a band was going to play. --- So we took our blanket and moved it to where the pigs wanted it, and while one marcher was asking for an officer's badge number, the cop grabbed him around the neck and threw him to the ground. Thousands of picnic-goers in the park saw this happen, and many came to chant "LET HIM GO" along with the rest of us.

At this point we were informed that anyone who had participated in the march was now trespassing on city property (it's a public park) and we were to disperse immediately, but we weren't about to abandon our comerade there lying on the ground. Everyone kept yelling and demanding his release, and eventually locked arms. By then the pig count had increased to 35+ and they had their batons and zip-ties out. We all stood together in the crowd of people and fought back as the police charged and grabbed as many protesters as possible and threw them face down on the ground. Arrests (and un-arrests) continued to be made for another 30 minutes or so with the final count at about 18.

Most of them have been charged with 2nd degree trespassing and Failure to disperse. They will go before a judge at 10am tomorrow morning. We need solidarity! If you are in the Eastern Washington area, come and support our comerades in jail at the Spokane Courthouse tomorrow at 10AM. Better yet, carry out your own solidarity actions in defense of our communities.
