(en) Poland, Warsaw: Shut down Guantanamo

Date Sun, 07 Jan 2007 10:07:14 +0200

Jan. 11 marks the fifth anniversary of the first extradictions to Guantanamo. In connection with this, groups around the world have decided to organize protests, demand that Guantamo be shut down and in general protest against torture and repression committed by the state using the pretext of the "war against terror."
In Warsaw anarchists protested on Jan. 6 in front of the US Embassy and the Ministry of Defense. Despite the rain, there was a good crowd from various organizations and collectives present. The action was entitled "Shut Down Guantanamo", there was a banner reading "Enough State Terrorism" and various signs, for example "This is what your democracy looks like" or "The real terrorists are in the White House". Some people held signs with the names of people detained. Part of the crowd was dressed in orange jumpsuits and a few people were dressed like US solidiers.

Anarchists spoke a bit about the situation in Guantanamo and the role of the state terrorists. There were also two street performances. Both portrayed methods of torture - the first displaying the traditional beating, interrogation and shot to the head method, the second portraying sensory deprivation and stress positions. The US army "Torturer of the Month April 2004" and helper picked people out of the crowd for arrest using different pretexts - for example, has a black and red flag, is at a demo or just looks like a terrorist to me. At the end of the theater, US soldiers took photos with their victims to send back to mom in Wisconsin.

After the US Embassy, there was a procession led my a drummer down to the Ministry of Defense. There anarchists talked about the role the Polish state plays in complicity, including the CIA flights in Poland and concerns that there may have been a secret prison in this country.

At the end, people from Food not Bombs explained their philosophy and served the hungry and wet a delicious meal.

The action was organized by the two sections of the Anarchist Federation in Warsaw in connection with the international action day.

The mainstream press published a quite lengthy report on the action and the main newspaper even started an internet poll on whether or not to shut down Guantanamo on their web site, so we consider the action a success that this issue was brought to the attention of millions of people.
