During the strikes and demonstrations of May-June of 1968, what shook the power
of the upper echelons was not the various slogans painted over the walls of
Paris, nor the spectacular street battles between the students on the
barricades and the shock police. It was the determination to link every aspect
of life in a sincere hope for true change, which translated into a spontaneous
alliance between young proletarians and students, children of a bourgeoisie in
the process of being proletarianized.
In March 2006, in the reply to the CPE, the Contract of First Employment (or
better still, the Slavery Contract), that alliance has been recreated, but with
a much larger reach, since the young people with access to higher education are
mostly of working class origin and also actually work in order to finance their
higher education, and are therefore subject to precarious labour conditions.
But also the unemployed, precarious workers and "illegal" immigrants are
participating in the huge demonstrations and unrest that belongs equally to
them, to all the "non-beings" which neo-liberalism has produced. When this
issue of "Luta Social" is published, on 28th March, France will be in the midst
of a general strike.

Let's hope it is also an occasion for a victory of the people and the workers,
revenge for the battles of 2003 against the increase in the pension age, when
the workers' determination was not strong enough to force the government, ally
of globalized capitalist interests, to cede.
