(en) US, PRESS RELEASE: SDS CALLS ON STUDENTS TO THE FRENCH CONSULATE IN NYC ON MARCH 28, 2006

Date Tue, 28 Mar 2006 08:16:04 +0200

STUDENTS FOR A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY (SDS) HAS ISSUED A CALL FOR
YOUTH AND STUDENTS TO PROTEST AT THE FRENCH CONSULATE TOMORROW
(MARCH 28) IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE FRENCH STUDENT CONFEDERATION
New York, NY. The New York City Chapters of Students for a Democratic
Society (SDS) have issued a call for a protest at the French Consulate
in New York tomorrow, March 28. SDS' NYC chapters are asking their
members and friends to assemble at 5 PM at 934 5th Avenue (between
74th and 75th Streets) in midtown Manhattan.
Students from several SDS chapters will be marching: Columbia,
New School, Pratt Institute and Pace SDS are all taking part.
Joining the protest will be members of the NYC Movement for a
Democratic Society (MDS), the post graduate arm of SDS.

SDS NYC has issued the following statement of support for the
French students:

To The French Student Confederation From SDS NYC:

Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) stands in solidarity with you in
your resistance to the First Employment Contract (CPE).

The so called First Employment Contract, as it has been presented to the
international community, is a proposition that would have devastating
consequences. It is a disaster for the young person seeking employment and
would serve only to enrich employers at the expense of oung workers. This
pathetic proposition fails completely in its ostensible goal of addressing
the 20% unemployment rate among French youth. We remain firmly convinced that
catering to the needs of an employer, making a worker subject to dismissal on
the whim of an employer, is not a legitimate strategy for alleviating
unemployment. It is a cynical maneuver.

If Mr. Villepan lacks sufficient creativity and vision to think of another way
to address the problem of unemployment, we suggest he attend a lecture in
economics at one of the newly occupied, fine French Universities.

Your courage provides our movement with inspiration. Let it be clear to all
French youth, and to all youth whom this statement may reach: we wholeheartedly
resist any repression or economic disadvantage visited upon the young people of
France by the French government.

The CPE contract circumstances are a blatant attempt to exploit the youth in
France's labor force. As long as you feel it necessary to resist the measures
that Mr. Villepan has put forth, we will resist with you.

In this spirit we are issuing a call for a day of solidarity actions on March
28th, 2006. We stand with you in your fight against this new legislation. We
stand with you in the struggle against any and all attempts to exploit the
youth of France. We urge you to continue your protest for as long as it takes
to secure justice. We are with you today, on March 28th, and as long as you
need us. We stand with you in the struggle for democracy!
