(en) US, NYC, Anarchist report back from the Minutemen Protest

Date Sat, 24 Jun 2006 17:05:55 +0300

A very good showing by @, who may have actually outnumbered the Marxists.
A respectable crew of NYMAA folks also. Thanks to O. we had a large
anarchist banner, which both severd both as a border to keep out the
irrational space aliens (OK, from Staten Island at least) and to cover
up the RCP literature table on the sidewalk. We missed several opportunities
to preempt the protest while the donut and cheeseburger brains first started
gathering but we'll know better next time. There was a long period of
tête-à-tête between groups until the NYPD showed up and started playing
musical barricades, finally putting us on opposing sidewalks across 19th
Street and tying up traffic with police cars. This of course caused the
volume of shouting and chanting to increase, with the pigs in the crossfire,
agitating some enough to begin hassling us, telling us we needed a permit for
the banner (wrong; thanks NLG observers), that we had to keep moving, and
finally screaming millimeters away from some of folks noses, looking for a
good reason to get out the clubs.

The anti-immigrant group (less than a dozen) were a bit confused when
informed that we in fact were not commies (I know, A., we need to
reclaim the term) but anarchists, as they had no response for that,
other than the non sequitur "go back to Mexico." Once the bozos sound
permit expired (not that the young white female doing most of the racist
yelling needed any amplification), things began winding down and people
on both sides were pretty much just milling around while paddy wagons
began assembling at the end of the street. A penning pattern familiar
to many who've ended up spending a night at the Tombs began took shape
around the storefront and it was obvious that plans were being made to
round up some radicals. After a bit more interchange with the cops
(kudos to Sam @ for keeping his cool under fire) we dispersed, some
for Radically Drinking, some to rest our vocal chords for use at the
ISO conference today and Sunday.
