(en) [French speaking anarchist federation] Solidarity against repression in St-Petersburg

Date Fri, 14 Jul 2006 17:18:49 +0300

As the G8 is about to begin in Saint Petersburg, where the Lords of the
World will once again make decisions in the name of those concerned,
oppressed, and poor and will impose strategies and policies that will
benefit only the rich and powerful, repression against those who dare to
raise their voices against social injustice and the political hypocrisy of
the G8 has been underway for several days already.
The Russian State is not known for its respect for human rights and it
seems that when it receives the world’s most "important" heads of State on
its soil, the Putin government gives carte blanche to its armed
accomplice, the police, to avoid, intimidate, or stop all protest.

For the past week arrests of protesters heading to Saint Petersburg have
increased, threats made by the police to known activists have worsened,
and activist spaces have been increasingly visited and observed by police
and State agents. The arrests have often been without pretext, or on the
grounds of an identity check; they are violent and end in various
accusations ranging from “hooliganism” to “terrorism”.

Over one hundred activists are currently being held by Russian police
throughout the country, many of them no longer able to communicate with
people outside of their detention centre. The train stations and airports
are under high surveillance. People travelling to Saint Petersburg are
systematically questioned and discouraged, including with threats, against
participating in protests organised against the G8, particularly the
Russian Social Forum which is already underway in a suburb of Saint
Petersburg. We can only assume that these attacks on freedom of movement
and on freedom of speech will increase over the coming days.

The francophone Anarchist Federation deplores the violence and repression
suffered by activists from Russia and the entire world who have come to
express their refusal of the capitalist system and all that it engenders
at the social, economic, and environmental levels. We express our
full-fledged solidarity with all those protesting against the G8 in Saint
Petersburg and we support their struggle.

Against the Lords of the G8 and all that they represent

For freedom of movement for one and all

For freedom of speech and freedom to protest

For direct, self-managed, anarchist, and internationalist democracy

Fédération anarchiste, 13 July 2006
