(en) CGT - FESAL: Campain in solidarity with Portugese fighting for the defense of public education system in Portugal

Date Wed, 15 Feb 2006 17:27:34 +0200

Our FESAL-E comrades inform us that the fight they are fighting
against the closing of a School is nothing else than a struggle
in defense of public education system in Portugal.
We ask you to send protest faxes to the Ministry of Education (see below)
as well as faxes in support of our comrades in Joao de Castro School.
The Portuguese government has decided to concentrate children in
schools and has plans to close more than 2.400 basic schools in
all the country. With the pretext that these schools have too few
pupils, they promote in this way an even greater depopulating of
rural areas and it implies too a shrinking of public school system.

In the cities, such policy is also applied, closing secondary
schools which have working and studying conditions.

An example of such policy is the D. João de Castro Secondary School
that is 'lucky' to rest in the top o f a hill with nice views to
the Tagus estuary. This is why they plan to close it.
But with great hypocrisy the des-Education Ministry proclaims it
wants to 'regroup it' with another nearby school.
But the Ministry doesn't tell that this other school has neither space nor
quality in it's buildings to house the 300 students, the 60 teachers and
the 30 other workers of the "D. João de Castro" School.

The students will close tomorrow the doors in protest.
The teachers and other workers had a General Assembly
last Wedenesday (8th Februar), were they voiced their
anxiety and protesta for what is attempted, in
a totally aauthoritarian fashion, a 'grouping' that is
nothing more than the disapearance of our school
(created in 1928 and in it's own building since 1949).

An open letter to the Education ministry with more than 400
signatures was produced against this closing.
The true motives to close the school obey to a logic that has
nothing to do with quality or rationallity. The real motives
are elsewhere, not clear ones, and therefore it cannot be
explained. We are aware that they are motivated in cutting
the public educational system and to give space to prived
schools. They are motivaed in making disapear a public space
to build luxury appartment buildings in this Lisbon hill
of Saint Amaro.

For all the above reasons we appeal to your active solidarity
and ask you to send protesting texts to the Ministerio
de Educação de Portugal:
NO TO THE CLOSING OF D. JOÃO DE CASTRO SCHOOL.
IN DEFENSE OF THE PUBLIC EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
NO TO SPECUTALION
NÃO AO ENCERRAMENTO DA ESCOLA D. JOÃO DE CASTRO.
EM DEFESA DA ESCOLA PÚBLICA
NÃO À ESPECULAÇÃO

FAX, Min. Educação:(351) 213 970 310

We ask you to send copy to the School.
