(en) Britain, The Class Warr electronic journal* - Nuclear Nonsense

Date Sat, 19 Aug 2006 16:15:57 +0300

Some fools appear to be placing their political hopes in Gordon Brown
replacing Tony Blair as Labour leader, and Prime Minister. Why? There
are no significant political differences between the two men. Their
differences are entirely one’s of ambition – both want the top job.
Anyone who considers Brown may be more “radical” than Blair only has
to look at his nonsensical views on nuclear weapons, or as he would no
doubt term it himself “Britain’s independent nuclear deterrent”.
There are plenty of arguments against Britain (or indeed anyone else)
having nuclear weapons. In the UK’s case the most obvious question is –
who are we actually going to point them at?

Class War’s point is however this – what is the point in having an
independent nuclear “deterrent”, when Britain does not have an
independent foreign policy? Indeed it is inconceivable that a British
Prime Minister (Blair, Brown or Cameron) would ever fire any such
weapon without the expressed permission of the President of the United

Given this, would it not be a lot cheaper and easier all round just to
let the Americans get on with the nuclear game, and spend the money on
something useful instead?
