(en) US, Lansing, National Day of Resistance M20-07

Date Fri, 18 Aug 2006 08:40:49 +0300

This e-mail comes from Direct Action, a radical grassroots organization out of
Lansing, Michigan. We are dedicated to the struggle against imperialism and
oppression everywhere. We've been active in the anti-war struggle over the past
four years. Most recently, we have been involved in counter-recruitment work.
Our experiences working as part of the anti-war movement have left us feeling
disappointed in ourselves and in the movement as a whole. Organizing against
the war has led us to believe that marching and chanting in opposition to
imperialist policies has not made enough of an impact nor done enough to end
the brutal realities of occupation. It is time to up the stakes.

We are proposing a nationwide day of resistance to this imperialist,
racist and senseless war. We propose occupations, acts of civil
disobedience, and direct action. We propose that these acts of resistance
target governments, corporations, and other institutions that perpetuate
American empire and war. These acts of resistance will begin to create
the consequences that the elite need to consider when they refuse to take
action on the blatantly unjust occupation of Iraq.

We believe that this day of action will be most effective if it is
organized locally, from the bottom up. We have this basic idea, but it
will only be effective if people all across the country are involved in
the planning and implementation of it. We would like to begin organizing
now. With this in mind, we would like to set up a meeting between any
groups interested in this proposal. The purpose of this meeting is to
come to an agreement on a more formal call to action and to build a
network around his campaign.

People interested in this should e-mail us back by September 1st, so we
can begin to figure out the when and where of a meet-up.

We support any and all actions people take against the war. For people
interested in working on this project, there are a few core principles we
should all agree upon:

1. Respect for a diversity of tactics- meaning we stand in solidarity
with and support ALL forms of resistance to the war. Although we may not
agree upon every course of action, we will not actively oppose other
people’s forms of resistance.

2. Respect for the autonomy of all groups. All acts of resistance are
decided upon and implemented democratically at the local level. No top
down bullshit or calling for everyone to go to D.C.

Beyond these core principles, we are very open to what the project will
look like and are excited about the input and ideas others have that will
make this day of resistance even better. We want this e-mail to begin
something that is larger than any of us, that includes many of us and we
are not interested in telling other people what to do.

This project is meant to confront the failures of the anti-war movement by
planning ahead with national coordination, taking risks, making demands,
and creating consequences. M20-07 will be a day to show the world that we
recognize how deep the blood of imperialism runs in Iraq and to
demonstrate that our rising resistance will run deeper!

There is much to talk about. If you are not interested we wish you luck.
If you are, let us know by September 1st and we will be in touch.

In struggle,

Direct Action!
