(en) Canada, Montreal, Omni Hotel: Transform your solidarity into an effective picket line!

Date Mon, 19 Sep 2005 10:33:50 +0300

Saturday September 24th 14h00 Rendez-vous à la statue Normand Bethune
Coin Maisonneuve/ Guy-Concordia (metro Guy-Concordia)
While most labour disputes in Montreal hotels ended in early July in favour
of the workers, only the strike at the Omni hotel continues after more than
2 months. The strikers, the majority of wich are immigrant workers, are
limited in their means of action. Everyday, they witness scabs doing their
work, assuring that money keeps flowing into the pockets if the Omni
bosses. In fact, the Omni, a five-star hotel, is running full capacity
with mainly all its rooms occupied.

The Workers Solidarity Network, a new worker's organisation based on direct
democracy and direct action, denounces the using of scabs at Hotel Omni and
the arrogance of the bosses who refuses to negotiate. In response to this
situation, the network has organized and participated for solidarity actions
with the workers on strike aiming to increase the pressure on the bosses so
they cede to the worker's demands.

These solidarity actions had for concrete goal to counter the unjust effects
of the labor laws imposed on strikers and that makes them fear injunctions.
In other words, reinforce the struggle of the strikers by implicating people
that are not directly touched by the conflict. Although this has not
resulted in concrete positive result in the negotiations for the workers,
the rank-and-file workers in their majority have strongly appreciated our
presence and our solidarity.

After almost two months on strike, it is important to continue to intervene
in the conflict by our concrete solidarity so that the boss finally cedes.

In this sense, the Workers Solidarity Network calls for another solidarity
picket, this time an effective and disruptive one, on Saturday September

Strength in numbers will be the determining factor in terms of the success
of this action. We need to be numerous and vibrant. We need to show the
bosses of the Omni that working people don't accept that fellow workers get
arrogantly fucked over by their bosses.

It's time to confront the Omni Hotel with our strongest weapon: solidarity
by means of direct action!

"A fighting union!"

direct democracy and direct action. We offer the alternative of fighting
unionism to the collaborationist unionism of the major labour federations.
