MONTREAL based, Nawrocki BRINGS NEW 'BEATS, BRAINFOOD & STRINGS' TO OTTAWA
After 18 years & 18 albums with all his bands (like the legendary
Rhythm Activism, Bakunin's Bum, DaZoque!, etc.), Montreal's primo
anarcho violinist/cabaret artist, Norman Nawrocki returns to Ottawa
with a show based on his critically acclaimed, anti-Empire first
solo CD, 'Duck Work,' Saturday Sept 10, Carleton University, Mike's
Place grad pub, 9pm. Tix: $5
The show is part of Carleton University's 'Alternative Frosh' events
organized by OPIRG.
Nawrocki, who has graced Ottawa's stages over the years with his
hilarious, hit solo sex comedy cabarets ('I Don't Understand Women!,'
'My Dick & Other Manly Tales,' 'Sex Toys!',etc.) is also known
internationally as frontman/violinist for all his bands (like the
legendary Rhythm Activism, Bakunin's Bum, DaZoque!, etc., on the G7
Welcoming Committee label), and his prolific 18 years/ 18 albums
output.
His last solo album, the anti-Empire, anti-war,'Duck Work,' was cited
by The Montreal Gazette as one of the top 10 local releases for 2004
(alongside CDs by The Arcade Fire, The Dears, Sixtoo, etc.). It's a
beat-rich, musically adventurous, lyrical sonic attack against the
forces of ignorance, greed & xenophobia, and offers a powerful,
stinging critique of American foreign policy & their hypocritical
'war on terrorism.'
On stage, Nawrocki loops, samples, strums & teases his amplified
violin, mixing in original beats and pre-recorded tracks to create
hypnotic, ambient soundscapes for his tall tales, comments on world
affairs, and dreams about how things could be different.
The result: 'Heavenly looped violins, warm percussion and insightful
spoken word'(Urbnet); 'Insightful, inciting, informative and joyful'
(Uptown, Winnipeg); 'An engaging, inventive musician' (Montreal
Mirror). Sometimes funny, always thought provoking, Nawrocki is
described by The Globe & Mail as 'A born showman who never lets his
audiences pass a dull evening.'
'Duck Work'(released byLes Pages Noires) features Nawrocki on driving
, looped cello, viola, violin & piano and a stellar crew of musical
guests from Montreal's underground scene. The 14 tracks explore
'anarcho house,' celtic punk, Middle Eastern swing, trance,
experimental ska/jazz, & bass-heavy ambient.
Nawrocki is also renowned across Canada for his workshops about
'Creative Resistance,' his books (like 'The Anarchist & The Devil Do
Cabaret') and his CBC radio work (like 'Bob the Talking Payphone').
