(en) Canada, A Message from the Editors of Upping The Anti* journal October 1st, 2005

Date Sat, 08 Oct 2005 15:34:21 +0200

We would like to thank all of the people that have made the first issue
of our journal a success. To date we have sold over 700 copies of the
first issue of Upping the Anti and recouped our initial publishing
costs. While our two main printing areas were in Toronto and Vancouver,
copies of the journal for local distribution were made from the online
PDF files in Fredericton, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Orange County
California, and a number of other places. The journal homepage has been
viewed online over 7000 times, and, while we do not have statistics for
the numbers of times that the PDF files were downloaded or printed off,
most articles of the journal were read online by approximately a
thousand people. To our knowledge, a number of activists are using
articles from the journal in local reading and discussion groups.
Activists in Vancouver, as well as activists in Sudbury Ontario, are
using the article by Selma James and the editorial of our first issue as
part of a reading circle. The article introducing Autonomist Marxism was
also used in a recent study group in New York City.

Distribution of physical copies of Upping the Anti was carried out in
every province of Canada in over 30 different cities. The journal is
being distributed in the United States by AK Press of San Francisco and
Black Sheep Books of Vermont. 45 copies of the journal were distributed
through various anti-capitalist circles in England, and individual
copies of the journal have been distributed to activists in Australia,
Argentina, Cuba, France, Finland, Germany, India, Kenya, Norway, South
Africa, Spain, and Venezuela. Copies of the journal were also
distributed to several US-based political prisoners and prisoners of war.

As we prepare the second issue of the journal for publication in late
October / early November of 2005, we welcome your assistance in helping
to distribute the second issue of the journal even more widely than the
first. Our second issue will contain interviews with Himani Bannerji and
Grace Lee Boggs, a roundtable discussion on the Palestinian solidarity
movement, immigration and refugee activism and the state of the antiwar
movement in Canada. We are printing articles on imperial feminism and
the war on Iraq, a critique of the politics of socialism from below, an
analysis of the current political situation in Québec, and an analysis
of indigenous struggles in Canada. There will also be reviews of the
books Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federici, Full Spectrum Disorder
by Stan Goff, 10,000 Roses: a History of Feminism in Canada by Judy
Rebick, and Alfie Roberts Speaks: an interview with Alfie Roberts by
David Austin.

If you would like to become an official distributor of the journal in
your town or region, please get in touch with us at uta_distro@yahoo.ca
and we will arrange distribution with you for either the first or second
issue. We are especially looking for people who are willing to be
publicly listed as distribution contacts with their name and e-mail
address in the journal. We are also interested in running exchange
advertisements with other radical publications and catalogs. If you have
a project for which you would like to have promotional space in Upping
the Anti, please get in touch with us to arrange details.

Copies of the first issue of the journal remain available for download
and distribution, and we will be doing a second print of the first issue
alongside our second issue so that you can order more copies from us. If
you are downloading the PDF file we would appreciate a note from you
letting us know where you are from and how you will be using the
journal. As always, we appreciate letters to the editor that take up
arguments and ideas expressed within the journal. The deadline for
articles for the third issue of the journal is December 15, 2005.

In solidarity,

The editors of Upping the Anti.
October 2005.
