The 1st Mediterranean Social Forum takes place in Barcelona from 16-19
June 2005. It is expected to attract hundreds of activists from the
Middle East, North Africa and Europe with diverse backgrounds under the
banner of "Another World is Possible". Many collectives, groups and
individuals do not view themselves within the political spectrum of the
MedSF since it takes a social democratic approach to reform the system
for a “more humane capitalism” not a confrontational radical fight
against it with a clear goal of putting an end to it. These people also
do not view themselves under its organizational structure as it is
dominated by mainstream political parties/coalitions and big NGOs as
well as not meeting the level of horizontality and autonomous structure
that many anti-authoritarian activists would not compromise over.

Despite the fact that the Mediterranean Social Forum is less of
controversy compared to its brother, the recent European Social Forum in
London, and the reality that it includes many groups and organizations
that are inspiring in both thought and practice, there are still a
number of concerns that are to be raised.

* Finances: despite the help provided by the Municipality of Barcelona,
that is involved in continuous crack down on one of the most basic human
rights through its speculation operations targeting people's right to
housing in favor of capital and the tourism industry, in addition to its
involvement in discriminatory policies towards migrant workers and
destructive policies to the environment - the Mediterranean Social Forum
is charging 250 euros as a fee for people interested in organizing a
seminar/ workshop with provided translation (100 euros without it). That
is not to mention the attendance fee - that was reduced for “Students,
unemployed and participants of the South shore to an obligatory amount
of 10Ero, and for Workers with inferior income to 1200 Ero to an amount of
20Ero, while for the rest it is 30 Ero. We view this as a limitation to many
collectives/individuals participation.

* Local contacts: The majority of the squatting movement in Barcelona,
which is fertile, not only in the demand and practice of the human right
to housing and public spaces, but also through integration with the
local communities through a serious of exchanges and interactions, was
not contacted that is not to say completely marginalized.

Due to these facts, and under the absence of a clear anti-capitalism
call and in the light of such structures we felt the need to create an
alternative horizontal autonomous space inspired by the hallmarks of the
People's Global Action and the previous autonomous spaces parallel to
various social forums. A space that is open for individuals and
collectives - free of limitations - to work, discuss and coordinate with
and among each other for radical change and action in the face of
growing brutal capitalism and ongoing militarization, corporate
globalization, and global ecocide.

We want to create open spaces for networking, exchanges, celebration,
thinking, action and what have you. We believe our ways of organizing
and acting should reflect our political visions and are united in
standing for grassroots self-organization, horizontally, for diversity
and inclusion, for direct democracy, collective decision-making based
upon consensus, and against the false consensus in which power and
capital is used to silence others.

We view the Mediterranean shores as a complex combination of various
kinds of oppression and repression that need to be fought, in addition
to a meeting point between the racist insatiable governments of war in
the North, and the exploitative dictatorships of the South, all
functioning under the reign of global financial bodies and
multinationals affecting the whole planet.

We are a loose network of individuals, groups, collectives and
grassroots communities and who act, think and struggle for another world
beyond capitalism. We do not have, nor represent, one single unified
position on the MedSF nor we are working against it. We in all our
diversity and decentralization, recognize, value and support the energy,
diversity, and experiences of those attending the MedSF. We are simply
aiming at creating an open space, open to all those that view themselves
within the anti-capitalist anti-authoritarian movement. We wish for a
social forum where all the above is taken in consideration, where we all
can sit and work together in a free open space.

Nous ne voulons pas d'un monde où la certitude de ne pas mourir de faim
s'échange contre le risque de mourir d'ennui.
We don't want a world where the guarantee of not dying of starvation
brings the risk of dying of boredom.
