(en) US, Anarchists Descend on Palo Alto, California Against Iraq War

Date Sun, 26 Jun 2005 15:33:37 +0300

They said there would be 800 dangerous anarchists descending on the
little town of Palo Alto, home of Lockheed-Martin and Stanford University,
known for its history of military-university cooperation (like researching
effective biochemical weapons for the US military). Palo Alto, where you
need at least $1 million dollars if you want to own a home.
An enormous inter-departmental police mobilization occurred in the face of
the threat of the anarchists.
A helicopter operated by the San Jose police hovered
overhead. Santa Clara County sheriffs with M-16s and
tear gas guns lined the streets. And, of course, there
were plenty of Palo Alto police in riot gear.

Well over a hundred anarchists took to the streets
anyway because they were out -- at any cost -- to
oppose the Iraq war and capitalist domination around
the world. The mostly young crowd took over streets at
University and Emerson and marched throughout the
city. At one point, the protest cut through a large
park to confuse police and made a beeline for the
local mall, which was mostly closed down because of
the protest.

After almost two hours of protesting, protesters were
met by a group of police on horses and the police
helicopter made an ominous announcement from the
skies: "You are unlawfully assembled. Exit west on
University or you will be subject to immediate
arrest." Several protesters locked arms and sat in the
street. Others began to wander off. Others implored
people to disperse but remain in the streets all

In speaking to the press, police seemed to be
impressed with the tight organization and
sophistication of the group - "...other agencies that
have dealt with the group report that "this group is
very sophisticated, well organized and employs various
tactics," said Palo Alto Police Chief Lynne Johnson.
An anarchist on the scene commented that "we try hard
to have a pro-organization anarchist group and we
appreciate that the police pointed it out. It makes us
feel like all of our hard work is not going
