(en) Chile: 24th day of Hunger Strike - Update Statement by the Political Prisoners [ca]

Date Tue, 14 Jun 2005 17:12:02 +0300

PUBLIC STATEMENT -------- On 7th June, the lower house of parliament quickly
passed the bill with a large majority. This political event, which serves to
quicken the process leading to our Freedom, is an example of the legitimacy
that we, as Political Prisoners, and our just demands have reached.
We Political Prisoners are happy, and continue our strike in the strong belief
that it will be victorious, with the serenity of knowing that we have not yet
won and that we must still be careful, with the conviction that up to now we
have basically acted well and that our actions have served some purpose.
As we have already said, the vote in the Chamber of Deputies is an important
political event and is part of a process that should culminate in a vote of
approval by the Senate. It is this stage, however, that still presents certain
unresolved aspects if it it to be a quick, effective and victorious process. It
is for this reason that we announce our continued Hunger Strike, as we continue
to see it as a necessary instrument in order to finally close this chapter of
15 long years of political imprisonment.

Bill, as with last year's Amnesty Bill, thereby meeting their own political
commitments. We ask that the government be involved actively in the process and
emphasise the UTMOST URGENCY of the Bill before the Senate; it already has the
political support with the vote in the lower house and the general scenario has
not affected in any way our march to Freedom. Furthermore, President Lagos
should also take the step of pardoning those comrades who are not covered by
the current Bill.

The Hunger Strike for freedom continues, as also should the political activity
and mobilizations, and with increased energy and drive, to ensure the final
stages are quickly completed, as we have not yet won. The gates are already
starting to crack under the weight of our action, but they are still not open.

We are 24 days into our action, and we are still firm in our beliefs and our
