France : Social protest and governmental repression

For the past three years, the French government has refused
to negotiate on sore matters (for example in 2003, with
criticism and huge gathering against its reform about pensions
and retirement and it has adopted attitudes of selfishness and
called on police intervention.
Now, after four months of a steady struggle from the high
schools students based on legitimate claims, backed up by
parents and teachers, the government is multipying hard police
interventions and youngsters arrests. The dialogue with the
authorities consists in ignoring criticism and in smashing the
On the 1st of June, the court ruling against Samuel Morville,
student and member of the high schools Co-ordination concluded
in a 500 euros fine along with a suspended prison sentence of
five months.
Other proceedings, with similar sentences occurred and were
declared against dozens of young students , for the only having
demonstrated and called for strike in schools.
The same tendency is to be seen in the postal service. The
administration announced last week the axing of 48 jobs in the
post distribution department based in Bordeaux.
The trade unions launched a protest gathering on May 26 th and
the police was called out and five receptionists were arrested
(3 from CGT and 2 from SUD) and four other demonstrators. The
administration asked for inmediate proceedings against the five
employees and against the unions CGT, CNT and SUD for having
"kidnapping, blocking people’s movement and set upon the freedom
of work ". On May 27 th, the judge dealing with the case refused
the postal service’s report.
Despite the sentence, the employees were suspended, along with
nine others, till a discipline judgement. All are members of
CGT, CNT and SUD unions and are under the threat of heavy fines.
The postal distribution has been on an illimitated strike since
May 29 th.
In the postal service as well as in the students’movement,
strikes and gatherings of support are foreseen .
Other cases of repression for labour protests (Daewo, etc.)
already exist.
We ask for you economical help and for solidarity messages.
