PRESS RELEASE --- Federal Secretariat of Alternative Libertaire May 29, 2005 Paris

The NO victory must lead to social struggle, not stay stuck in institutions
This rejection of the European Constitution is definitely a sizable
victory for the masses. We took revenge for Maastricht in 1992.
Alternative Libertaire campaigned against this Constitution by
promoting an anti-capitalist and internationalist NO. Our greatest
satisfaction is that the large mobilization for an anti-liberal and
anti-capitalist NO marginalized the extreme Right, the best ally of
the YES supporters in this referendum.

Serious matters, however, are only starting. We believe that this
victory in itself is no panacea, first because Raffarin, Strauss-Kahn
and Seillière are big enough to do the dirty work of social
demolition all by themselves. They don't need a European
technocracy to guide them, even though they often hide behind
Brussels to attack social gains. Second, that social demolition is
synonymous with the "construction of Europe," which will proceed
with or without a Constitution. From the Single European Act to
the Stability Pact of Dublin, from the Maastricht to the Schengen
Treaty, the foundation of the Union is privatization, austerity,
budget restrictions, repression of undocumented workers.

What kind of victory is it then?
It is a small social victory and a big symbolic one. It all depends on
how much we can get out of it.
It would be a shame if this victory only served as a springboard for
beating the Right in 2007 and replacing it with a Left government
that will carry out basically the same policies. The way a Laurent
Fabius could become a born-again virgin of the Left during this
campaign, with the complicity of nearly all the NO forces on the
Left, makes us wonder.

For our part, we bet that tens of thousands of people involved with
local NO committees do not have any illusions about the
opportunist and liberal character of this alliance. What we expect
from this NO victory is some lifting of the masses' morale, which
could be a springboard for renewed social struggle and a step
forward for European social movements.

MEDEF [bosses' organization—Translator] is already worried
about this thunderbolt.
We should work on that if we want to make the capitalists tremble
again and further our hopes for a new society, based on socialism
and self-organization.

Our detailed analysis will be published in Alternative Libertaire's
summer issue.
