(en) Imprisonment of objector Mehmet Tarhan*goes on [tr]

Date Wed, 13 Jul 2005 18:40:21 +0300

In today's trial of conscientious objector Mehmet Tarhan who is held captive
in Sivas Military Prison over 3 months, again no decision of release was
taken. Getting arrested on 8th of April in Izmir related with his being a
deserter, conscientious objector Mehmet Tarhan was transferred to the
military troop in Tokat and put in Sivas Military Prison with the claim of
"insisting on disobedience." Right after he was released from his trail on
9th of June though his case was going on, he was sent back to the recruiting
office and put into the vicious circle of troop and prison again.

Facing repression, threat and blackmails from the prison administration and
prisoners as a gay and conscientious objector, Mehmet Tarhan continued his
hunger strike for 28 days to protest his imprisonment conditions. Being kept
in the hospital for a while after his previous trial, Tarhan was not
released from the case in which he is being tried with the same claim. In
the trial held in the morning of July 12th 2005, it was decided that
connecting both cases his trial is postponed to 4th of August 2005 Thursday
on which he'll also be tried from his first case.

Mehmet Tarhan whose hair and beard was cut before by beating up, faced the
same treatment again by force under the police of soldiers, one day before
his trial on 12th of July.

[Ed. Note: Mehmet Tarhan is an anarchist total/conscientious objector,
facing a kind of life sentence because of silly interpretation of Turkish
military justice system which sees "conscientious objection" just as a
repeated "disobedience" not as a unique attitude. Tarhan's struggle is
supported by anarchist/anti-authoritarian & anti-militarist groups in
