(en) Chile: The state of health of the Chilean hunger strikers [ca, it]

Date Mon, 04 Jul 2005 06:59:43 +0300

Because we want them free, they will leave free!
The state of the strikers' health after 48 days of hunger strike is declining
rapidly, with great danger to their lives, but their will to fight and to
achieve once and for all some justice in a Chile where democracy is still
handed out in small doses sustains them with their flag held high... Hasta la victoria!
On the state of health of the hunger-striking comrades:
Hardy: The decrease in his white blood cell count is thought to be due to a viral
infection, though it seems more probable that it is a simple consequence of the
malnutrition caused by the strike. More worrying is the problem affecting his
kidneys which is getting worse and seriously threatens both his kidneys and his life.

Claudio: Tests on his liver show some alteration probably due to the
development of a non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis, resulting from his weight
loss. He has in the past suffered from hepatitis, a factor that is impacting
negatively on his 44 days of hunger strike. The alterations in his potassium
levels are the direct consequence of the strike, and could have disastrous
consequences on his life. It is vital that he be transferred to the prison
hospital.

Pablo: The drop in his blood sugars levels is due to two factors: one, the drop
in ingested food and the other, associated with increased consumption by part
of his body as a reaction to the fast. His liver problems also seem to be the
result of non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis caused by the drop in weight. Lastly,
the loss of blood through the urine shows renal damage that could result in
kidney failure, with disastrous consequences.

Considering the above, it is vital that the comrades are moved to the prison
hospital to help them as much as possible, knowing that in these moments their
lives are running serious risks. It is indispensable that specialized
laboratory tests are carried out.
