ANARCHISTS ---- Melbourne has a long Anarchist tradition with the different
generations experiencing the usual ebb & flow of activism and resources.
Among the remarkable characters in the early movement Chummy
Fleming is best known as a founder of the Melbourne Anarchist Club
in 1886. The MAC organised the first May Day on May first event. In
the international solidarity spirit they commemorated the "Haymarket
Martyrs" the six Chicago Anarchists murdered by the State for the
Bosses. The Chicago activists crime ? their active role in the 8 Hour
day struggle by immigrant workers in the USA. As well as the
"english speaking" anarchists from Celtic, English Scottish and
Welsh regions there are folks from Argentina, Bulgaria, Canada,
China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia,
Potugual Spain, USA & elsewhere.

LIBERTARIAN WORKERS FOR A SELF MANAGED SOCIETY
The best known current local Anarchist group in Melbourne is the
Libertarian Workers.

The Lib Workers have been established in Victoria since 1977.

Through the Lib Worker's initiative the Anarchist Media Institute,
Joe Toscano presents a weekly radio show on community radio
station 3CR. see www.3cr.org.au Anarchist World This Week is also
heard around Australia via the Community Radio Satellite.
It broadcasts every Wednesday 10am to 11am

Joe Toscano also presents a talk-back show Thursday 9am to 10am
on 3CR.

Lib Workers also focus on the Reclaim the Radical Spirit of Eureka
celebration in Ballarat every December 3rd.

Joe and another Lib Worker Steve Reghenzani have also stood in the
National elections as VOTE INFORMAL candidates and have helped

SUWA & other Anarchist Radio shows
Some other anarchists also work on the long running SUWA weekly
show on Fridays from 5.30pm and 6.30pm Squatters & Unwaged
Workers Airwaves see www.geocities.com/squattersairwaves The
SUWA show has regulalry rotated presenters who are divided into 4
crews who take on a Friday each month.

There is also Food Fight every Friday 6pm to 6.30pm which monitors
the anti-Genetical Modification campaign and the
organic/permaculture resistance. Music shows presented by
anarchists include late night Wenesday DIY PUNK and Monday
BITTERNESS BARBIE shows

The 5th ANNUAL AUSTRALIAN ANARCHIST CONFERENCE
26TH - 27TH FEBRUARY 2005
Held annually and rotated around Australia (Melbourne 2001, Sydney
2002, Brisbane 2003, Perth 2004) the annual gathering of anarchists
is also open to autonomists and mixes history, debates, films &
campaigns.

In 1986 a Hundred Years of Anarchism in Australian was Celebrated
in Melbourne around May Day on May first.

This year's gathering is being held at the CERES Environment
Park-Lee Street, Brunswick East, Melbourne**Free entry, includes

OTHER ANARCHIST GROUPS

The local anarcho-syndicalists (anarchist in the labour and working
class community movement) had a presence in the public transport
industry in the late 1980s producing SPARKS a widely read rank and

Food not Bombs uses the kitchen at 5 Pitt Street, East Brunswick
3057. FnB does free vegan food on the streets and at events such as
the Anarchist Conference.

There are anarchist resources like @ House, printing press and
computer xchange but they are private access through invitation only.

Anarchists are also active in the internet eg Oceania Indymedia,
indigenous solidarity, student unionism, environmental,
asylum seekers, health, community legal centre and housing
campaigns.
