IF THE SHOE FITS, WEAR IT
Germans who are sick of the ┬┤harping on┬┤ about Nazi
crimes against the Jews (The Age 17/1), are no different to
Australians who are sick of listening to stories about Aboriginal
dispossession and genocide. The angst displayed in the Age┬┤s Berlin
correspondent┬┤s article at the German peoples attitude to the holocaust,
stands in sharp contrast to the positively celebratory mood displayed by
Australians on the 26th January, when they celebrate the beginning of the
European colonisation of Australia and the dispossession of a people that
had continuously occupied the continent for over 40,000 years.

Holding a national holiday on the 26th January is as appropriate as
the German State holding a national holiday to mark the beginning of
the Nazi extermination camps. It┬┤s extraordinary how many
Australians continue to celebrate Australia Day on the 26th January.
I┬┤m sure those Australian who choose to turn a blind eye to this
country┬┤s history would be aghast if the Japanese had
successfully invaded Australia and Australia Day was celebrated on
the day the Japanese invasion began.

At least the German State has attempted to make amends and
continues to make amends for the actions of the Nazi government. In
Australia, the exact opposite has occurred. Successive Australian
governments, especially the Howard government, have attempted to
rewrite history by taking actions as petty as rearranging the displays
at the Australian Museum in Canberra and as significant as passing
Federal legislation that all but neutered the Mabo High Court
decision in 1992 that acknowledged for the first time in Australian
European history that indigenous Australians had rights to land in
law because of their previous occupation of this land.

As Australians make plans about how they will celebrate Australia
Day on Wednesday next week, it┬┤s time a little thought debate
and reflection went into what Australians are actually celebrating on
the 26th January. In Germany, denying the holocaust is a criminal
offence. In Australia, those academics and commentators that deny
Aboriginal dispossession and genocide ever occurred, are lauded as
national heroes and media celebrities.

If Australians spent a few minutes thinking about why we are
vigorously waving the national flag on the 26th January maybe, just
maybe, we like the Germans, may begin to make some practical
amends for the actions of previous Australian and colonial
governments that resulted in the genocide and dispossession of this
continent┬┤s original inhabitants.

OH NO, HERE WE GO AGAIN

Mark, Kim, Stephen, Lindsay, Julia are the names on
everyone┬┤s lips. Yep, these are the movers and shakers in Her
Majesty┬┤s loyal Opposition. Now that Mark Latham has decided
to join John Hewson on the political sidelines, the jockeying has
started for the position of leader of the Opposition. Within an hour of
Mark┬┤s announcement that he was forced to retire because of
continuing ill heath, Kim Beasley was waxing lyrical about his desire
to lead the ALP out of the political wilderness.

Well, I┬┤m afraid I don┬┤t care who leads the Alternative
Liberal Party (ALP). The issue is not one of ┬┤leadership┬┤,
it┬┤s about policies. Looking at the ALP┬┤s policy initiatives
now and in the past two decades, it┬┤s obvious that there is little
if any real difference between the policies of both major political
parties. The days when parliamentary parties had significantly
different policies are long past. Parliamentary democracy is
democracy in name only.

It┬┤s time that a little bit of thought went into finding out what
democracy is all about. Is democracy about giving a politician a
signed blank cheque to make decisions on your behave for the next 3
years? Or is it something else?

Direct Democracy Not Parliamentary Rule is a new political party
that was launched in Ballarat at the Eureka stockade site on the 3rd
December 2004 during the celebrations to mark the 150th
anniversary of the Eureka rebellion to highlight that democracy is
much more than the empty ritual of casting a ballot every 3 years to
decide who the new slave masters are. A slave, who has the power to
elect his or her master, is still a slave.

Next time you participate in the parliamentary farce, think about
what you┬┤re doing. Do you want to continue with the
counterfeit, anaemic, bogey parliamentary process? Or do you want
to be involved in the decision making process? If you┬┤re not
happy about giving power to politicians to make decisions on your
behalf, you should consider looking at direct democracy as an
alternative to parliamentary rule.

Direct Democracy is about participating in the decision making
process. It┬┤s about making decisions with those people these
decision effect and electing or appointing delegates with limited
mandates that are related to these decisions so that these delegates
can coordinate decisions made at a local level at a regional and
national level.

Parliamentary Rule or Direct Democracy?-The decision is in your
hands ┬ş you decide!! If you┬┤re interested in the struggle to
shift power from the centre to the periphery, then join Direct
Democracy Not Parliamentary Rule and spoil their invitation only
party.

┬┤THAT┬┤S JUST THE WAY LIFE GOES┬┤

Questioned about the United States chain of command eluding any
responsibility for the abuse of Iraqi prisoners, Charles Graner
sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for his part in the torturing of
prisoners in Abu Ghraib prison, meekly said ┬┤That┬┤s just
the way life goes┬┤.

Graner┬┤s defence which was rejected by the military jury was
that ┬┤he was following orders to torture and humiliate prisoners
in Baghdad┬┤s notorious Abu Ghraib prison┬┤. Although this
statement does not absolve him of individual responsibility for his
actions, it does raise important questions about whether what
happened at Abu Ghraib was an isolated act or part of a State
sanctioned program to break the spirits of detainees through ritual
humiliation and institutionalised torture. When you examine the
evidence about how Mamdouh Habib and Terry Hicks have been
treated during their 3 year incarceration in Camp X, it┬┤s obvious
that humiliation, sensory deprivation and physical torture are part and
parcel of the US military stock in trade.

The whole purpose of opening Camp X in Cuba was so the US
military authorities could go about their gruesome business without
having to worry about the US courts and constitution. Graner┬┤s
┬┤That┬┤s just the way life goes┬┤ indicates that he
understands there is no point rocking the boat. The US government
from President Bush down have got away with what was done at Abu
Ghraib, but more importantly continue to get away with using
sensory deprivation, physical torture and humiliation as part and
parcel of the US practise of dealing with dissent both at home and
overseas.

Graner knows he┬┤s the sacrificial lamb in this grubby little
exercise. He knows that if he keeps his mouth shut and head down
and doesn┬┤t make too many waves, the Bush administration and
the US military will look after him and his family while he
┬┤serves┬┤ time in prison for following orders that have been
tacitly rubber stamped by the Oval Office, ignored by the US judiciary
and enthusiastically implemented by thousands of US civilians,
police, military and intelligence personnel.

MURDER MOST FOUL!!

The murder of over 130 journalists last year, one of them Australian,
highlights the high price that continues to be paid by journalists who
report from the war zones. Although 28 Australian correspondents
have died overseas in the quest to send the news back home, little is
known about the only journalist who has died as a result of injuries
sustained while covering a rebellion in Australia.

Arthur Frank Hasleham, a reporter for the Geelong Advertiser and
the Melbourne Herald, was 150 years ago camped 300 metres from
the Eureka stockade site. On the morning of the battle at Ballarat on
the 3rd December 1854, Frank Hasleham was shot through the right
shoulder by mounted police while he was taking notes about the
massacre that was unfolding outside his tent. He was handcuffed and
left to bleed to death outside his tent by the mounted police.
Hasleham was just one of the many miners and bystanders, who for
up to 2 hours after the Eureka battle had ended, were murdered and
robbed by the Victoria Police.

Hasleham received 400 pound compensation in 1855 from the
Victorian government for the injuries he received at the Eureka battle.
He was continually troubled by the musket balls lodged in his
shoulder and he had them removed while working for the Age in
1860. Hasleham returned to England in late 1861 and died at the age
of 34 at Ramsgate Kent on the 17th December 1862 as a result of
complications related to the surgery for the gunshot wounds he
received in Ballarat 8 years previously.

It┬┤s possible he was singled out and shot by the Victoria Police
as he was an important eyewitness to the police riot and massacre
that occurred during the Eureka rebellion.

The murder of journalists by thugs who do not want the world to
know what is happening in the world┬┤s trouble spots, is an
occurrence that is happening far too frequently. It┬┤s important
their deaths are kept in the public eye, because without the
courageous position they┬┤ve taken, the brutality and carnage
that accompanies war would go unreported and unchecked by a
public that is blithely unaware about what is being done in their
name, unless these journalists took the risks they took to get the
news out.

FREEDOM?

I was surprised to read in the Herald Sun (17/1) that a survey
conducted by the National Australia Day Council found that 64% of
Australians said their freedom was the best feature about being
Australian.

Freedom? Australians may enjoy the freedom to consume, to travel
and to make money but when you examine the more important
underlying freedoms, most don┬┤t seem to realise that since
September 11th over 40 separate pieces of Federal legislation have
been passed as a consequence of the hysteria surrounding the spectre
of terrorism that have stripped them of the most basic fundamental
human freedoms.

Any Australian can at any time be legally kidnapped by the State,
secretly interrogated for weeks because they may inadvertently have
access to information that may help the authorities with their
inquiries. For the first time since Federation, Australians can be
legally arrested, imprisoned and interrogated, although there is no
suggestion they have committed a criminal offence. If they refuse to
answer questions or do not cooperate with the interrogation, they can
be jailed for up to 5 years.

Legislation was passed during the Olympics which gives 3 ministers
of the Crown the power to unleash the armed forces on the
Australian people if they believe Commonwealth interests are
threatened. Legislation was also passed that indemnify┬┤s the
Australian armed forces from subsequent legal action for their
actions.

Hundreds of new Federal and State laws have stripped Australians of
freedoms they have enjoyed for generations; freedoms that have been
won through the sacrifice of the lives millions of people over
centuries. Freedoms that allow the individual to go about their
business without the fear of arbitrary arrest, detention and
interrogation have been stripped away in the past 3 years by the
stroke of a pen.

ANARCHIST QUESTION AND ANSWER

Q. Would everyone behave altruistically in an anarchist society?

A. Of course not. The confusion amongst anarchists as well as non
anarchists about the role of altruisms in an anarchist society is a
major stumbling block in attempts by activists to convince people to
consider anarchism as a serious political philosophy. Anarchism is
principally based on self interest. Humans are neither intrinsically
good nor intrinsically bad. How they behave is determined by their
need for food, shelter, company and security. Their self interest
revolves around their need to satisfy these basic human needs.

Anarchists believe that both individual and community self interest
are best met through cooperative not competitive behaviour.
Anarchist communities are structured in a manner that does not
allow the individual or a minority within that community to impose
their will through force on that community. This does not mean it
can┬┤t happen, what it does mean is that institutional structures
based on hierarchy that allow rulers to impose their will on millions of
people, do not exist in an anarchist society.

Anarchist resistance against the State and hierarchical institutions is
based on their fear that hierarchy provides the mechanisms that
allows rulers to put the self interest of themselves, their families, their
friends and their political allies above the self interest of the rest of the
community. Anarchists have no faith in humans doing the right thing
by those around them, that┬┤s why they don┬┤t support the
creation of institutions and structures that give other people both the
right and power to impose their will on the communities they rule.
Altruism-the regard for others as a principle of action is the preserve
of those who believe in the ridiculous idea that if they allow
themselves to be ruled, those who rule them will do the right thing by
them.

Individuals and groups within an anarchist community who attempt
to put the satisfaction of their individual needs before the satisfaction
of the community┬┤s needs as a whole, will soon find they will
face serious sanctions within that community. The survival of an
anarchist community is not based on individuals behaving
altruistically within that community, it┬┤s based on creating
structures and institutions within that community that do not allow
individual self interest to override the self interest of the community
as a whole.

ACTION BOX
HERE WE GO AGAIN!!

┬┤Direct Democracy Not Parliamentary Rule┬┤ was launched
on the 3rd December 2004. By now, most readers of the Anarchist
Age Weekly Review will have received or have access to the
application form to join ┬┤Direct Democracy Not Parliamentary
Rule┬┤ (if you haven┬┤t, you can download a copy through
the internet rulebythepeople.org or you can write to P.O. Box 5035
Alphington 3078 Victoria Australia for a copy).

The most difficult problem faced by extra parliamentary activists
living in a parliamentary democracy is challenging the idea that
parliamentary elections have anything to do with democracy. It is
extraordinary how many people continue to put their faith in the idea
that giving politicians a signed blank cheque to make decisions on
their behalf for the next 3 years has anything to do with democracy,
especially when the type of decisions that can be made in parliament
are determined by the needs of those in the corporate sector who
control the purse strings. The problem is compounded in Australia
because in Australia we have both compulsory enrolment and
compulsory voting. At the Federal election in 2004 of the 13,098,461
on the electoral, 12,354,983 (94.32%) voted. Of those who voted,
11,715,132 voted formally while 639,851 (5.18%) voted informally.
Every election about 10% of eligible voters are not enrolled and
around 10% of those enrolled, don┬┤t vote or vote informal.

Over the past 27 years, the Anarchist Media Institute has conducted
┬┤don┬┤t vote and vote informal┬┤ campaigns with little if
any important impact on voting figures and on Australians belief that
democracy is confined to the idea of casting a ballot every 3 years.
Our attempts to register a political party formed in 1999-VOTE
INFORMAL TODAY DIRECT DEMOCRACY TOMORROW came
to nothing, as in 5 years we were only able to attract 193 members,
far short of the 500 figure you require to apply for registration of a
Federal political party. Registration allows the party┬┤s name to
be placed next to the party┬┤s candidate on the ballot paper and it
gives the political party the power to ┬┤bulk┬┤ nominate
candidates. This means you don┬┤t have to go through the
process of gathering signatures to nominate for a particular seat.

┬┤Direct Democracy Not Parliamentary Rule┬┤ was formed
on the 3rd December 2004 on the 150th anniversary of the Eureka
rebellion to highlight the important role direct democracy has played
in Australian political life. Our aims are very simple, to present direct
democracy the idea that the people involved in a decision should
make that decision and elect and appoint delegates to carry out those
decisions as an alternative to the idea that casting a ballot every 3
years to elect your rulers has anything to do with democracy. In a
dictatorship, your rulers are imposed on you, in a parliamentary
democracy you have the power to choose your rulers, in a society
based on direct democratic principles you are your own ruler.
┬┤Direct Democracy Not Parliamentary Rule┬┤ is not focused
on the idea of electing people into parliament, it┬┤s focused on
the idea of exposing the limitations of the parliamentary process and
raising direct democracy as a viable alternative. We want to register a
political party so we can raise these ideas during electoral campaigns,
a time when many Australians are thinking about politics.

Six weeks after our formation, we have 38 members, we require 500
members (550 to be on the safe side) to apply for registration as a
political party. We would like to be able to put in our registration
papers by the end of 2005. This would give us 2 years of campaigning
time before the next Federal election in 2007. If you┬┤re sick and
tired of standing on the sidelines, if you┬┤re sick and tired of the
current political farce, then join ┬┤Direct Democracy Not
Parliamentary Rule┬┤ and act as a thorn in the side of all those
political parties who continue to support the parliamentary process.

AUSTRALIAN RADICAL HISTORY
THE EUREKA SERIES 2005-No. 2
Q. What happened to the men that were acquitted of High Treason?
PART D Timothy HAYES

Timothy Hayes was a pivotal figure in the Ballarat Reform League.
He was chairman of the important Bakery Hill meeting that was held
on the 29th November 1854. He was arrested about 100 metres from
the stockade on the 3rd December 1854 and was acquitted of High
Treason in the Victorian Supreme Court o the 19th March 1855.

Hayes married Anastasia Butler in Ireland. They and their 5 children
migrated to Australia in 1852. Anastasia had her 6th child soon after
they arrived in Australia. Hayes attended the 2nd anniversary of the
Eureka rebellion in Ballarat in 1856, he obtained work as the
┬┤Town Inspector for nuisances┬┤ for Ballarat East soon
after. He and Anastasia separated in 1861. He went overseas soon
after, visiting South and North America. Timothy trained as a military
engineer in San Francisco and returned to Ballarat in 1866. He
worked on Melbourne┬┤s railways and died in 1873 aged 53. His
wife Anastasia died in Ballarat 19 years later on the 6th April 1892.

John PHELAN

John Phelan was arrested on the 3rd December 1854 and was
charged with High Treason. He was tried and acquitted of High
Treason charges on the 27th March 1855. Interestingly, Phelan had
been a juror at the inquest into the death of James Scobie.

Phelan was a good friend of Peter Lalor and went into partnership
with him. Catherine and John Phelan settled on land at Cabrico in
Central Victoria and farmed the land until he died at the age of 42 on
the 21st February 1874. His wife Catherine was left to raise their 6
children single handled. Catherine died at the age of 89 in August
1922. John and Catherine Phelan are buried in the Terang Cemetery
in Central Victoria.

James Macfiel CAMPBELL

Little is known about James Campbell. One of the two Afro
Americans tried for High Treason as a result of the Eureka stockade
uprising, he was acquitted of the charge on the 27th March 1855. He
was bon in Kingston Jamaica and took an active part in the Eureka
uprising. The Sydney Morning Herald described Campbell as
┬┤one of the mongrel crew of German, Italian and Negro
rebels┬┤. No other information is known about Campbell┬┤s
life before he participated in the Eureka rebellion. Nothing is known
about what happened to him after he was acquitted.

It┬┤s extraordinary that such little historical notice has been taken
about the fate of the many of the defendants who were involved in
what arguably is one of the most interesting and controversial trials in
Australian history.

NEXT WEEK: - More stories about what happened to the 13 miners
who were acquitted of High Treason between 22nd February and
27th March 1855 in the Victorian Supreme Court in Melbourne.

BOOK REVIEW
┬┤MY UNION, RIGHT OR WRONG
┬ş A History of the Ship Painters and Dockers Union 1900 -
1932┬┤ By Issy WYNER,

A Takver┬┤s Initiative www.takver.com

┬┤My Union, Right or Wrong┬┤ has been published on the
internet by Takver. Issy Wyner is well qualified to write the history of
the Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union. He joined the union
in 1939, became its Secretary in 1974 and later its President. In 1983
he had published, through Hale and Iremonger - Sydney, the history
of the early years of the Balmain Labourers Union, the direct
antecedent of the Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union.

┬┤My Union, Right or Wrong┬┤ is the second part of the
history of the Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union. Issy
Wyner has been closely associated with the Trotskyist movement in
Australia and has had a long involvement with the Labor Party in
Balmain in Sydney. He has served as a councillor and as Mayor of
the Leichardt Council in Sydney.

The book examines the history of the union from 1900 to 1932 by
examining the lives of some of the more prominent members of the
union as well as looking at the structure, activities and disputes the
union was involved in. The Federated Ship Painters and Dockers
Union ceased to exist in the mid 1990┬┤s. The author has
succeeded in documenting the early history of one of Australia┬┤s
more radical and controversial unions by examining how the union
was reformed and by looking at the influences that moulded the
union into the militant organisation it became. The early history of
this union is a history of radical democracy in the trade union
movement; an idea that plays little, if any, role in the highly
centralised and bureaucratic union rump that exists in Australia
today.

┬┤My Union, Right or Wrong┬┤ should be compulsory
reading for militants, activists and radicals who are still interested in
the concept of radical democracy. The book includes a very useful
Appendix and has an extensive photo index. It is almost 600-pages
long. ┬┤My Union, Right or Wrong┬┤ is based essentially on
the Minutes of the union┬┤s meetings that were held from 1900
to 1932.

PERSONAL OBSERVATION

I was thinking about writing about the relationship between road kill
and the abnormal number of predators that exist in many parts of
Australia as I┬┤ve travelled on some country roads recently, but I
bumped into someone I┬┤d never met before at a gathering on
Sunday night who said something I┬┤d never heard before. I
can┬┤t remember how the conversation turned to the topic
I┬┤m about to comment on, but it did. It never ceases to amaze
me how total strangers can tell somebody they┬┤ve been talking
to for a few moments the most intimate details about their lives.

Somehow the conversation drifted to her childhood during the
Second World War. I now remember how the conversation came
about, a woman sitting on my right made a comment about J.
Wright┬┤s cartoon in the Sunday Age (16/1). An angel and God
share the same page. The angel asks God ┬┤Why he created the
tsunami?┬┤ God answers ┬┤To get Australians to show some
compassion-sending them asylum seekers, didn┬┤t work┬┤.
We had a little chuckle, she volunteered she was a refugee.

Her mother had placed her younger brother and sister on a loaded
handcart and pushed them 90 kilometres from the Russian zone to
the American zone in Germany as WWII was drawing to a close. She
was 6-years old and remembers her flight as if it was yesterday. The
kindness of complete strangers made the journey an adventure for the
children. She remembers the US soldiers throwing the children cans
of meat and remembers the farmers who let them rest on goose
feather pil-lows in front of their fireplaces in the middle of winter. Her
mother succeeded in travelling from one sector to another, a young
woman with 3 kids under 6, pushing a handcart on foot in devastated
Germany with the minimum of trouble. The woman I was talking to
found the whole affair so exciting she played refugees with her
brother and sister for years after the trek. They made little handcarts
and practices ┬┤fleeing┬┤. Sixty years later, she still has fond
memories about her experiences.

It┬┤s both tragic and depressing to think that in a time of
unprecedented prosperity, Australians have by and large supported
the indefinite detention of children in the desert behind razor wire
because their parents have had the audacity to seek asylum in the
land of milk and honey. I don┬┤t think these children will be
thinking so fondly about their ┬┤adventures┬┤ in Australia
that they┬┤ll be ┬┤playing refugees┬┤ with their brothers
and sisters when they┬┤re deported or finally gain temporary
protection visas.

STOP PRESS
CRAP!!

The Monash University centre for Population and Urban Research
assertion that the ALP┬┤s diminishing voter base is increasingly
concentrated along ethnic lines (Sunday Age 16/1), reminds me of
the statement that pants kill.

If you look at the data surrounding mortality, more people wearing
pants die than people not wearing pants. The figure, although
correct, doesn┬┤t really mean anything because more people in
the world wear pants than skirts.

The assertion in ┬┤Loss, in any Language┬┤ (16/1) that voters
from non-English speaking birthplaces vote Labor because they were
born overseas, doesn┬┤t really mean anything. Labor┬┤s
survival in Sydney and Melbourne is not dependent on a
person┬┤s ethnicity, but the situation voters find themselves in.
People born overseas, who live in metropolitan Melbourne and
Sydney, tend to either have children in secondary college or
university or tend to be retired. They face the problems of paying off
their mortgage, paying for their children┬┤s education and paying
for access to health services. People living in outer metropolitan
Sydney and Melbourne tend to be younger and tend to have young
families. Their primary concerns revolve around paying off their
mortgages and child care expenses.

The Labor Party has traditionally promoted policies that promote
access to public education and public health care, while the
Coalition┬┤s policies over the last decade have dramatically
increased the out of pocket education costs and to a lesser degree the
health care costs faced by families where parents have been born
overseas. On the other hand, the Howard government has been able
to convince the electorate that only the Coalition can hold interest
rates down. Their electorate policies also provide better government
subsidies for child care costs than the ALP┬┤s policies promised.

Faced with this dilemma, both people who were born overseas who
live in metropolitan Sydney and Melbourne and people who live in
outer metropolitan Sydney and Melbourne voted for political parties
they believed could best address the issues that were important to
them.

Ethnicity has as much relevance for what political party they voted
for, as whether a person died wearing pants or not, has to the reasons
they died.

ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS

Sadists & pedophiles preyed on wards of the state in SA, some of
whom were treated as medical guinea pigs, a commission of inquiry
was told today. The commission of inquiry into kids in state care
opened in Adelaide today with its head, ex Supreme Court Justice
Ted Mullighan, apologising for holding the 1st session in a church
hall. The location was met with anger by some ex wards set to allege
sexual abuse by the clergy to the inquiry. More than 200 written
submissions have been received by the inquiry, which will deliver an
interim report to the state govt in 6 months. SA Parliamentary
Speaker Peter Lewis, himself a victim of child abuse, told the inquiry
heinous crimes had been covered up by powerful officials in the state.
The inquiry's terms of reference were criticised by ex ward Debra
Smith for being restricted to investigating claims of sexual abuse,
excluding physical & mental abuse. Ms Smith said electric shock
treatment was performed on some wards of the state who were
treated like "medical guinea pigs". "We_ve a doctor here in SA who
was giving shock treatment to kids for things like running away,
being so-called uncontrollable," Ms Smith said. "An uncontrollable
child isn_t an uncontrollable child, it's an unhappy child. "How dare
people tell us we were uncontrollable while we were being raped,
pil-laged & plundered by the state, by the govt the very people that
were supposed to be looking after us." SA Family & Communities
Minister Jay Weatherill said "we fully expect the outcome of the
inquiry will not be comfortable for this or past governments."

The WA Lib Party says it intends to limit gay rights if it_s elected
next year. WA's Lib Party leader Colin Barnett said he intended to
raise the age of consent for gay males, ban adoption & IVF services
for gay & lesbian couples & deny access to the Family Court.

Aussie kids are being falsely diagnosed as having medical problems
when they really have problems learning to read, according to a govt
enquiry. Dr Ken Rowe, the newly appointed head of the national
inquiry into the teaching of literacy, said "hospitals are complaining
that their clinics are being filled with kids who are being referred for
things like Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder...but once the
pediatricians sort out the children's literacy problems, the behaviour
problems disappear. What is essentially an education issue has
become a health issue." The Royal Children's Hospital is overhauling
its clinical services after an internal audit revealed that 1/4 of all kids
who attended the emergency dept & other outpatient services for
medical help, were diagnosed as having non-medical conditions,
such as learning difficulties & behaviour problems. Ad Prof Vicki
Anderson, director of the hospital's dept of psychology, said "ADHD
is clearly overdiagnosed...the appeal of a pil-l for ADHD is much
easier than arranging twice-a-week remedial reading sessions." Prof
Anderson said families often sought help at the RCH's learning
difficulties clinic b/c of long waiting periods at schools to have a
child's learning problems assessed by Education Dept psychologists.

The Coalition & the Labor Party have united to defeat an amendment
that would have given equal rights to gay ex soldiers. The govt &
opposition both voted against the proposed amendment to the
Veterans Bill, that would_ve allowed veterans to leave their pensions
to same-sex partners. The UN Human Rights Com declared last year
that current Aust laws are discriminatory. (Source: MCV newspaper)

The bosses of the Tattersall's lot-tery, who each 'earn' more than $1
mil a year for helping to run the company part-time, are seeking an
extra $100 mil for the stress of their job. As well as their wages David
Jones, Raymond Hornsby, William Adams & Peter Kerr each receive
director's fees, super & 2 free cars. The men say they┬┤ve
endured "significant pain & trouble". 1 eg they gave involved
entertaining a UK politician, having him stay at a family farm &
showing him the MCG. The men claim they┬┤ve suffered stress
from public & media scrutiny of the Tatts empire, although neither
William Adams nor Peter Kerr have been quoted in a major Melb
newspaper for at least 10 years. The men also cited the stress of using
charitable donations to gain favour with the public, politicians &
business partners, & using their political connections to influence
govt policy. (Source: news.com.au)
