On 7th January 2005 a frightening rail accident occurred nearl Crevalcore on
the Bologna-Verona line, resulting in the death of 17 people. Responsibility
for the accident lies in several facts: the fact that that section of the line
is composed of a single track without necessary security measures being in
place; the train company which is obsessed with the idea of cutting anything
that represents a cost - apart from managers' wages, of course; the frantic
process of privatization which allows the company's arrogant administrators to
behave like managers of a company which is, if only for the time being, still a
state company - the biggest state company in Italy.

On 12th January 2005, rail workers from overy corner of Italy met in Bologna to
commemorate the victims of the disaster, to denounce the demolishing of the
State Railways, to demand the right to work and travel in safety, to sound the
alarm about a situation of the most serious negligence on the part of the
highest sections of the industry.

The Assembly of Rail Workers in Bologna mandated a group of representatives of
safety workers from all over Italy to proclaim

A NATIONWIDE STRIKE**
FROM 9.00pm SUNDAY 16th JANUARY 2005
TO 8.59pm MONDAY 17th JANUARY 2005

THE FIRST RAIL STRIKE PROCLAIMED BY THE RAIL WORKERS THEMSELVES

...because for us, 17 deaths are worth far more than 10 minutes!

This strike will be just the first in a series of initiatives in our struggle:
* FOR a safe, social, public railway system
* AGAINST privatization
* FOR the IMMEDIATE return to their jobs of the four colleagues who were sacked
and for the withdrawal of all disciplinary measures which are vexatious and
merely instruments of repression against dissent by workers who have denounced
serious shortcomings and those who simply demand the respecting of existing
regulations
* AGAINST the introduction of temporary work contracts in the rail sector
* FOR the defence of our professionality and our jobs
* AGAINST a national labour contract which forces us to endure bad working
conditions and hours.

WITH PEOPLE DYING AT WORK THERE IS NO TIME TO LOSE!

WE MUST ALL STRIKE UNITED!!

** The strike will observe legal regulations regarding public safety and the
minimum service will also be guaranteed.
