A Libertarian Conference took place on 4th December 2004 at the Zaragata
Pavilion in Setúbal. The meeting - that followed several months of preparation,
both through Internet and meetings - saw the participation of groups and
individuals from Algarve, Almada, Coimbra, Ferreira do Alentejo, Leiria,
Lisbon, Porto and Setúbal and lasted practically the whole day. The morning
session dealt with the problems of the libertarian movement in Portugal since
25th April 1974 and its present state, while the afternoon session was
concerned with proposals for joint action. In the end it was decided that
meetings of this type should be held regularly (the next was agreed for early
summer 2005) and that the groups should collaborate throughout the year in
united initiatives, continuing to respect the specific nature of each
collective.

The Setúbal conference was useful above all for the fact that it established or
re-established contacts and dialogue between groups that had spent years in
almost complete isolation, if not in conflict with each other. On the positive
side it was, in general, quite civilized, something that was not always the
case in the past. It should also be pointed out that there was a refusal to
decide on a federative structure that would be at this time (and probably for
the forseeable future) premature and totally artificial.

The encounter also had some negative aspects. Some of the interventions during
the morning session were unfortunately not even minimally concerned with the
questions on the agenda and during the afternoon the discussions on proposals
for action were not always as correct as they could have been. However, the
most negative aspect was the lack of support for the Zaragata group from those
of us visiting Setúbal. The members of this group were practically alone and
struggled not only with the tasks of the logistical organization of the event,
but also after the event with re-organizing and cleaning the premises. In the
future, with a little more organization and goodwill, it will surely be
possible to avoid a repeat of this sort of situation. Generally speaking,
however, the event was a positive one and let us hope that the next encounter
can contribute to strengthening relations between the various groups.
