Hi. This is our fifth issue! It seems like a victory considering that
we’ve outlived so many other independent publications with very
little money, equipment, or experience. We enjoy putting out this
newspaper but for a small collective the pressure of continually
needing to raise money is too much. If we have to continue to do all
the fundraising than we can only publish twice a year from now on.
Each issue costs about $800 dollars after mailing, printing, and other
expenses like websites and PO boxes. As far as ads, we’ve been
supported by some collectives like the Seward Café, North Country
Co-op, and Hard Times Café but we’ve also given a huge
amount of free ads to others as well as not getting paid for ads like
from the fucking hare krishnas in Dinkytown (who bounced a check
to us) and others. Daybreak has had benefits and bake sales but
there’s no way that we could publish four times a year on the
money we have the energy to raise and then also work on the paper
which takes hundreds of hours for meetings, writing, layout, and
distribution.

We give 5,000 copies away for free each issue (we’d love to
publish larger amounts if we had the money). That’s 25,000
people that have read about radical ideas that they might not have
otherwise heard about. If we’re not perfect cut us some slack
because we also need time to develop our skills. We didn’t go to
school to be journalists, distributers, editors, and graphic designers so
if we have some pictures that are blurry you’ll have to excuse us
as we snuck into the computer lab and learned photoshop while
hiding from the lab attendants.

The fact is that the Twin Cities needs independent media on the
streets. People complain that there are no independent media sources
but neglect them when they’re around. If you don’t support it
than no one will and it will die (same with every project). People
can’t expect radical projects to compete effectively in capitalist
economies. Until we get the donation of a print shop, we need money
to keep on running. So here’s a challenge for you to fill out and
return to us.

Daybreak! is a waste of paper and should stop publishing (please
include 5$ bill with this response)

I love Daybreak! We need to support independent media so
here’s money to keep running.

I like Daybreak! And am in a band or art project so I’ll hold a
benefit for you!

Please send well hidden donations to Daybreak! Po Box 14007
Minneapolis MN 55414 or by paypal to daybreak@tao.ca
www.daybreaknewspaper.org

People will notice that we’ve added lots of reviews this issue.
This is part of our attempt to represent the anarchist cultures of zines,
music, and literature that sustain our communities in tough times.
We’ve also set up a new website at www.daybreaknewspaper.org
hosted by the kind people at www.mutualaid.org. We’ve also
added a columns section where people we think are good writers can
write about more than political issues, but about the lifestyle,
emotions, and experiences of Midwestern radicals. If you’re
interested in writing one send us a sample. Please also contribute to
our new U-Lock Justice column! It will feature information on stolen
bikes, run ins with cops, run ins with drivers, and news on the bike
revolution. We love getting letters. That’s the only way we know
if anyone is reading it so please keep sending them. We didn’t get
ANY submissions to our rename the pigs contest from last issue!
NONE! So get with the fucking program mutherfuckers.
