A fierce blaze which devoured a disco in Buenos Aires left at least 175 dead
and over 700 injured on Friday. Seven months ago, the Defensoría del Pueblo of
the City of Buenos Aires warned that every weekend more than 400,000 young
people in Buenos Aires were risking their lives due to "non-fulfillment and/or
violation of fire safety regulations with reference to dancing premises". This
was pointed out during an official statement by the Defensoría, published by
the DyN news agency on 31st December. "... at the Cemento club, the owner's
ambition drives him to let in as many people as he can; if concerts continue at
Cemento, sooner or later there'll be a bloody fire that'll kill us all. I don't
want to die at Cemento..." (extract from an article by Helmostro Punk in the
magazine Fin de Siglo, No.18 - December 1988).

This is the sort of impressario who does deals with the authorities in an
Argentina where the lives of the young are worth less than the cost of a
concert ticket, where the lives of the poor are worth less than a car radio,
where the lives of the old are worth less than the hams hanging in the
supermarket...

This is the society that we want to change. That is why we are here, why we
fight. That is the reason for our tears, for our lives, our disgust and our
rage. So that there can be a future, because we have a new world in our hearts.

There will be justice when we make justice. With sorrow, we send our greetings!
