Will be publishing at the end of March 2005, Volume 1 of Anarchism: A
Documentary History of Libertarian Ideas, edited and introduced by
Robert Graham. Volume 1 is subtitled, From Anarchy to Anarchism (300 CE
to 1939), and contains material from ancient China to the Spanish
Revolution. It is the most wide-ranging and comprehensive anthology of
anarchist writings to appear in English, and probably any other
language. The Black Rose website provides access to the full table of
contents. Volume 1 includes much material that has never before been
translated into English, from Europe, Latin America, China, Japan and
Korea, as well selections from long out of print and difficult to locate
sources, such as Voltairine de Cleyre's translation of Jean Grave's
Moribund Society and Anarchy. Some of the many topics covered include
the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, industrialization and the
emergence of socialism, the 1848 revolutions in Europe, the First
International and the Paris Commune, anarchist communism,
anarcho-syndicalism, art and anarchy, anarchy and education, women,
love
and marriage, anti-militarism, propaganda by the deed, the rise of
fascism and totalitarianism, and the Mexican, Russian and Spanish
Revolutions. This book should prove to be an indispensible resource for
everyone interested in anarchist ideas.
