FOREIGN WORKERS ARE FELLOW WORKERS. The Bosses Are the Problem
Foreign workers aren't the problem; this is a distraction
from the fact that the bosses in Alberta are fleecing all
of us. It's CLAC, Klein and companies like Ledcor that
are the problem. You don't have to go back too far and we
are all 'foreign' workers, the only exception being our
aboriginal brothers and sisters.
Alberta and Venezuela Share Something in Common; Rat Unions
In order to understand what is happening here, in Alberta,
one must also understand what is happening in Venezuela.

There are two kinds of unionist in Venezuela,
one kind is the working class militant unionist, who
wants to see a better life for his or her family, and is
currently defending themselves in an attack on their
standard of living by the bosses. These workers have
formed their own national union and are supporting the
reforms of the Chavez Government despite the protests of
Big Oil and its allies.

The other kind is the worker who is unfortunate enough to
be represented by a rat union that wants to cut deals
with the bosses. While they may be militant their union
is undemocratic, and not run by the workers. You see
Venezuela has their own 'CLAC', the Central
LatinoAmericana de Trabajadores (CLAT). It is CLAT
workers that CLAC will import into Alberta to work at
wages below those of the other Trades Unions. CLAT does
not support the popular Chavez reforms. The reason that
CLAC is so keen on bringing in workers from Venezuela is
the current revolutionary situation where workers are
running their own factories is scaring CLAT workers in
that country.

It is pretty obvious what is happening here: a rat union
in Canada wants to collaborate with their fellow rat
union in Venezuela, in order to better serve their
masters and to remake the construction industry into an
'open shop', while providing jobs for those who refuse to
support the progressive reforms of the Chavez government.

We have to choose which side are we on.
Are we on the side of workers, whether those workers are
from Canada or not, or are we on the side of bosses' The
Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) thinks workers and
bosses have nothing in common, so we say we have
everything in common with the workers the world over!

Yes to Salting CLAT, Yes to Salting Venezuelan Workers
As members of the labour movement we have brothers and
sisters all over the world, this is the labour movement's
most underused tool: international solidarity. What we
need is not more or less foreign workers, what we need
are more union workers. One way we can make sure this is
the case is to link to the new independent National Union
in Venezuela to try and to build an alliance with them to
work with us. To bring in workers from Venezuela that
will wobble the job if need be, to get the same pay and
benefits we have.

We Need Worker to Worker Solidarity
The best way to fight for our rights is in solidarity
with these workers, if they want to bring up foreign
workers, they have to be union workers, paid the same as
everyone else. When free trade was first set up they
moved all the work to sweat shops in the south, now they
want to bring the sweatshops here.

Standing up for fellow workers, means you are standing up
for yourself.
