What is Mayworks! Montréal?

A festival of working people and the arts, Mayworks! is a
multi-disciplinary arts festival that celebrates the building of
communities and people's struggles for social and economic justice. Built
on the premise that workers and artists share a common struggle for decent
wages, healthy working conditions and a living culture, Mayworks!'s goal
is to promote the interests of cultural workers and trade unionists and to
bring working-class culture from the margins of cultural activity onto
centre stage. Mayworks! is Canada's largest and oldest labour arts
festival (founded in 1986 by the Toronto and York Region Labour Council);
this is the first time the event will take place in Québec. Celebrating
the unique working-class culture of the Québec labour movement and the
changing face of the working class, Mayworks Montréal is organized on the
premise that in Montréal, making up 45% of the population, immigrants are
often relegated to the lowest ranks of the labour market when Canadian
institutions do not recognize their skills, professions, and educations.
The first Mayworks! Montréal will be organized in Côte-des-Neiges, a
working class community where newly arrived immigrants come to settle.

Mayworks! is held on the occasion of May Day, the real Labour Day, which
historically commemorates the struggle of working people throughout the
world, and is recognized in every country except the United States,
Canada, and South Africa. This despite the fact that the holiday began in
the 1880s in the United States with the fight for an eight-hour work day.
In order for working class culture to emerge onto center stage and to
stimulate a discussion of working class issues as they are evolving in
today’s communities, Mayworks Montréal is organizing a festival of working
class struggles in order to celebrate the art of resistance in solidarity
with the annual May Day march.

Mayworks! Montréal's Principles:

1. To use culture to bridge the divide between working-class, immigrant
organizations, the labor movement.
2. To promote working-class solidarity through cultural exchange and
collaboration.
3. To promote cultural activism which engages issues of social and
economic exploitation in homes, on the streets, and in the workplace.
4. To create links with global struggles for social and economic justice.
5. To encourage the participation of workers in the organizing process in
a non-hierarchical and proactively inclusive way.
6. To be a space to organize resistance.
