Conscientious/total objector Mehmet Tarhan, who is well
known to antimilitarists and many NGO activists, has
been arrested and is going to be sent to the barracks.
Mehmet once again refused to make use of such "rights"
as adjournment and declared his disobedience.
The incident occurred as follows:
Policemen took Mehmet Tarhan into custody this morning
at 5 AM from a hotel in Basmane, a district of Izmir,
where he went to work at a book fair. He was held in
the police station until working hours of the
recruitment office started. When Mehmet arrived at the
recruitment office, he was asked to sign documents of
deployment in order to be sent to a military training
unit. Mehmet said, "You brought me here by force. I am
a conscientious objector and won't sign anything". He
was subsequently asked to write a petition, stating
that he is a conscientious objector. Mehmet insisted,
"I will not write or sign anything. You brought me
here by force and you should solve the problem you
created yourself". As a result the former protocol was
extended with a supplementary protocol, stating that
he refused to sign both of them. The "superiors" were
called. Three officers of higher rank came. While until
this point Mehmet was allowed to sit in the garden and
smoke, he was now "attached" to a recruit, who was
told that his service would be nullified if Mehmet
escapes.

Later on the commander of the recruitment office
called the police station and demanded a squad to
guard Mehmet. Three policemen were sent.

Some time later the gendarmes were summoned to take
over Mehmet and deploy him to a military training unit
in Tokat. One particular detail is strange:
While "his" prospective unit was in Samsun, he was now
urgently reassigned to Tokat.

LAST MINUTE UPDATE:

Mehmet was handcuffed and put into a car. He wasn't
told where they intend to take him. He refused to
cooperate, so they had to haul him inside.

Mehmet already declared that he is in hunger strike.

Antimilitarists started to organize the campaign to
free Mehmet Tarhan and to underline the right of
conscientious/total objection. The first meetings
to discuss further action are announced and will take
place this evening in the major cities.

Brief info on MEHMET TARHAN for those who don't know
him:

Mehmet Tarhan declared his conscientious objection at
a press conference held at the head office of the
Human Rights Association (IHD) on 27 October 2001:

Mehmet Tarhan read a press statement on behalf of a
group of antimilitarists at the "Conscientious/Total
Objectors' Rice Day" in front of the Ankara Sihhiye
Officer's Club on 5 September 2004. Mehmet and two
other friends are now subject of a legal investigation
based on the claim to "alienate the people from the
army". Mehmet refused to testify:
