We're gathering to give support to the arrested Greek consciencious objector
Giorgios Monastiriotis
On September 23rd, Thursday at 12:30, we'll be in front of the residence of
the Greek Consul on Taksim Istiklal street, to demonstrate our solidarity
with arrested consciencious objector Giorgios Monastiriotis, and also to
protest the jingoists.
We will march on the way to the Consul's residence after we all assemble at
Taksim tramway stop at 12:15.

Georgios was a military personnel who worked on contract, which makes him a
professional who gets paid to do what he was told to. But his heart and mind
made him realize that there was no point to go on but to object and
disconnect from the war mechanisms. He refused to be sent to the Persian
Gulf for a "mission" related to Iraq in May 2003. But the consequence of his
act, as in many other countries, was to end up as a convict and an outcast.
He was arrested on Monday, 13 September 2004, and immediately tried and
sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison. Our aim is to demonstrate our
solidarity with Georgious on his act, and never let him forget that his
friends from the other side of the Aegean will be on his side in the
struggle against the supporters of war that try to oppress the consciencious
objectors worldwide.

Please do express your words of peace on your placards that you'll bring
along... All the anti-militarists are welcomed to this meeting. Please help
us spread this invitation by infroming
your friends directly or any means that would be effective.

Note :
Giorgos Monastiriotis gave the following statement prior to his refusal in
May 2003: "Acting on the basis of my conscience, I refuse to take part or
contribute by any means in the relentless slaughter of the Iraqi people. I
refuse to take part in a war that is not ended, as even now after its
official end people and among them many children are being killed. Even if
this war is officially finished, many more are to come, as war is necessary
for the expansion of the dominance of the ruling powers. I declare my
immediate resignation from the Hellenic Navy, which is a mechanism that
promotes inhuman practices through orders and hierarchy and acts as a means
of extortion and repression of the movement and the uprisings of the people.
My refusal is also the minimal act of solidarity due to the Iraqi people and
to the peaceful sentiments of the Greek people."
