More and more news of anarchist ideas and practices throughout the world, and
Brazil, is arriving. It is a clear sign that anarchism is alive, spreading and
growing, though timidly and without the social strength that long ago it
possessed. It is forging a path for itself as it goes... The comrades of the
Federação Anarquista do Rio de Janeiro (Anarchist Federation of Rio de Janeiro
- FARJ) has made a further step in the endless building of anarchism in that
city, with the inauguration on Saturday, 18th September, the "Centro de Cultura
Sociale" in Rio de Janeiro, in the presence of about 60 people. There follows
an account of this event and the projects by one of the organizers of the
CCS/RJ. Long life to the CCS/RJ!

"Everyone congregated in a large circle on our patio and each of the projects
or activities in progress was presented. Many comrades who had participated in
the International Libertarian Conference were there in order to find out about
the "Biblioteca Social Fábio Luz", the public face of the FARJ, established on
18th November 2001, which is dedicated mainly to anarchism, its ideas,
struggles and history. The BSFL, in the spirit of the old libertarian "ateneus"
or syndical libraries, also includes works whose themes include philosophy,
history and education, and even Brazilian and foreign literature, poetry etc.

Later, the main project of the CCS/RJ was presented, that is of the manufacture
and sale of cookies by young students between 14 and 18 years of age, who live
in the forgotten communities of the outskirts of the city, mainly in Morro dos
Macacos.

The kids themselves presented the project and spoke about the experience of
self-managing their work, where all decisions are taken by themselves alone.
The CCS/RJ provides them with a means of production (equipment, ovens, dough
mixers, electricity, gas, etc.). All the money collected through the sale of
cookies is divided equally between them.

The CCS/RJ also provides space for the "Grupo Luz do Sol" [Light of the Sun
Group - tr.] to provide extra schooling to children of the neighboring
communities, as well as a workshop where recycled products can be re-used,
developed by our comrade Berimbau. Next Sunday, 26th September, the CCS/RJ will
host an exhibition of objects made with the recycled materials. Additionally,
the CCS/RJ also hosts yoga lessons and a mosaics courses.

In the near future, the CCS/RJ will be organizing a nucleus of lawyers who will
provide legal support to the people of the poor communities in the Vila Isabel
area of the city, which will take the name of the great anarchist writer, Lima
Barreto.

After presenting the internal activities of the CCS, the external activities
had the CCS/RJ supports were dealt with, such as the urban occupations like
Nova Conquista in Jacarepaguá and Chiquinha Gonzaga in the city centre.

The event concluded with a talk by two comrades - Felipe Tombolini of the
"Instituto de Estudos Anarquistas" [Institute of Anarchist Studies - tr.] of
Santiago, Chile and Frank Mintz of the CNT-Vignoles, France. After that, the
participants relaxed and got to know each other."
