1. REFUGE FOR ADRIAN DRAGAN, STATELESS ROMA IMPRISONED BY IMMIGRATION CANADA FOR 16 MONTHS!
2. COMMUNITIES UNDER ATTACK: PROJECT THREADBARE PUBLIC FORUM
3. NEXT PICKET OF METROPOLITAN HOTEL
1. Adrian Dragan has been held for 16 months awaiting removal0 to Romania.
He is a Roma (also known as "Gypsy") and faces serious danger and
repression if removed to Romania, where Roma people are regularly attacked
and persecuted. In fact, Adrian renounced his citizenship in Romania in
1993 to condemn the racism against Roma there, and since he does not have
formal citizenship, he is now being held in jailed limbo, without rights
as a citizen in either Canada or Romania.

Canada has already tried once to send Adrian to Romania, but he was
refused at the border and sent back to Canada, to continued detention by
Immigration Canada.

On Friday, the president of Romania, Illiescu, will be visiting Canada,
with one of his purposes being to discuss Adrian's possible removal to
Romania. President Illiescu must guarantee Adrian's safety or refuse to
bring him to Romania!

Call, write or fax the Romanian Consulate and demand that President
Illiescu refuse to accept Adrian unless he can guarantee Adrian's complete
safety and freedom in Romania.

It is very important that letters and calls occur before or on Friday:

2. COMMUNITIES UNDER ATTACK: PROJECT THREADBARE PUBLIC FORUM

Communities Under Attack:
Project Threadbare Public Forum

September 22, 2004
7pm
Sidney Smith
100 St. George Street
Room 2135
University of Toronto

SPEAKERS:

JAGGI SINGH (No One is Illegal-Montreal)
MONA EL-FOULI (Campaign to Stop the Secret Trials)
AHMAD JABALLAH (Campaign to Stop the Secret Trials)
Representative (Human Rights Action Committee)
Representative (Pakistani Action Committee)
Project Threadbare Speakers

Post 9/11, under the guise of national security, the Canadian government
has launched a full fledged attack against South Asian, Arab and Muslim
communities. Heightened ‘security’ laws are now being used as a pretense
to detain and deport immigrants and refugees from our communities.

The refugee hearings to determine the status of those men who still remain
in Canada one year after the Project Thread raid of last August, of whom
there are only 7 left of an original 24, are set to begin at the end of
September. Therefore, the need to highlight the devastating effects this
operation has had on peoples' lives and the importance of organizing to
assure their safety is particularly urgent.

The men targeted by "Project Thread", are not alone in their suffering.
Mona El-Fouli is the mother of two children and wife of Mohammad Mahjoub,
one of the five men targeted by Canada's Security Certificate. Last week,
a chartered jet was scheduled to fly Mahjoub out of Canada this afternoon
and return him to Egypt and a future of prison, torture, and cruel and
unusual punishment. But that flight was cancelled shortly after a stay was
granted, temporarily preventing this illegal deportation, after which he
has been returned solitary confinement at Metro West Detention Centre to
continue an indefinite period of incarceration which has been marked by
endless humiliation and abuse.

Ahmad Jaballah has had only two touch visits with his father, Mahmoud
Jaballah, since his dad was imprisoned three years ago on a security
certificate. The elder Jaballah, father of six, came to Canada as an
Egyptian refugee fleeing torture and now faces deportation to this horror
while enduring continued indefinite incarceration.

A representative from the Pakistani Action Committee, as well as Jaggi
Singh of Montreal's No One is Illegal, will speak about the ongoing work
of self-organized communities and their allies to take action around
specific cases and larger issues of racism within immigration policy. The
Action Committee has recently seen the deportation of three outspoken
families from the community.

On September 22, Project Threadbare will host a public forum that will
bring together activists and directly affected people from similarly
targeted communities. We will give voice to our collective struggle
against the on-going detentions and deportations that are tearing apart
our communities and demand that there be status for all!
