Over the last few days, an international libertarian conference has
been taking place in So Paulo (Brazil). Yesterday, the final debate
was interrupted because the police, guns in hand, detained one of the
comrades who was standing at the door of the building, handing out
libertarian material. A group of military police (the equivalent of the
Guardia Civil in Spain) arrived at the door of the University of So
Paulo, where the conference was taking place yesterday (it had been
transferred there due to space problems in the building of the
organization "Ao educativa", where it had been taking place). Gun in
hand, one of the police officers accused the comrade of the illegal
street trading. When the participants at the conference (about 85-90)
inside discovered what was happening, they came out and tried to stop
the arrest. A human chain was formed around the comrade. At that
moment, the police unit, unable to handle the situation, requested
reinforcements. Four more police cars arrived. The human chain
continued with some struggling, but the cops finally were able to get
the comrade into their patrol car.

At that stage, several comrades began to set up blazing barricades,
with garbage, barriers and other objects, while the police continued to
struggle with the other comrades. The car containing the detained
comrade was unable to leave due to the crowd (several passers-by joined
in, indignant at the scene) that struggled and blocked traffic.

Faced with this situation, the police stopped brandishing their
firearms and began to bombard the crowd with pepper gas and then
started beating people (leaving several bruised). Finally they
succeeded in taking the comrade to the police station, where everybody
quickly moved to concentrate. After two hours and thanks to the
pressure of all and to the legal work by the lawyers and comrades of
the ABC (some of whom were involved in the organization of the
conference), the comrade was released having been charged with
resisting authority, for which he will have to stand trial unless the
case is dropped. All his material was confiscated, including t-shirts
with anarchist slogans, pamphlets and his wallet that was stolen by the
police scum.

We believe that this repression was not a specific action against the
conference or against So Paulo anarchism, but rather part of a
crackdown on street trading which the PT municipal government has
already declared on street traders.

In So Paulo there is a large fringe of the population whose only means
of support is street trading, and now the PT super-democrat and
defender of the workers has declared war on them, arming the municipal
police for the task (where before they could not hold weapons of any
type) and giving carte blanche to the military police. These police
swoop in large groups, destroying the traders stalls with their patrol
cars and jumping out gun in hand to nab the trader. It is yet another
pearl of the PT, the super-left that will bring liberation to Brazil
but which has thus far only brought continuing misery and a police
State. Now the comrade faces a trial and will have to pay 160 Reales
(officially 45, but in reality the equivalent of almost 200) to get
his stuff back. Only idiots can defend the political parties,
especially the PT. Their defenders can only be treated as enemies and
get what they deserve.
