The project has been initiated by a group of artists and activists
inspired by the growing network of autonomous social centres
around the country.

Although more established in countries like Italy and Spain, the
concept of these social centres has recently started to take off in
the UK, with new centres in Manchester, Nottingham, Brighton,
Oxford, Leeds and London.

As more and more of our time and everyday lives become
commodified, it becomes increasingly vital to create places where
people aren't judged by their ability to consume or to produce,
where real human discussion and self organised activity and
creativity can take place.

These projects provide opportunities for all kinds of activities.

Cultural activities and events such as:
* amateur theatre
* art installations
* accoustic concerts
* film nights
* poetry slams
* photo exhibitions
* political discussions and meetings

Skill sharing and workshops;:
* dancing classes
* juggling
* tai chi
* bike repair and maintenance sessions
* language lessons
* computer training

Resource exchange and other projects :
* free shops
* info library
* media lab
* internet access
* kitchen / cafe

These free spaces provide places to socialise, sitting and
chatting with friends, neighbours or strangers in a friendly
atmosphere - a chance to read a book from the library or browse
through the newspapers - enjoy a cup of fair trade tea or coffee -
relaxe in comfortable surroundings to eat your own lunch, or
enjoy an affordable and healthy vegan, halal and kosher meal
made by volunteers.

These projects are run on an entirely voluntary basis by the
people involved. They are not charity workers or social workers.

The projects are about encouraging and creating a spirit of
co-operation, solidarity and mutual aid. They are not a top-down
services or commercial enterprises run for profit - instead they
are funded day-to-day by donations given by the users, or raising
funds through benefit events such as gigs, cafes or film nights.

The RAMPART can be used for events, meetings,
exhibitions, classes, workshops or whatever. If there is any
cause, campaign, belief, activity, skill etc that you would like to
share with others, then book a time, stick up some posters and
do it.

One of the goals for the RAMPART is to provide a space for
debate and to promote the exchange of views on a wide range of
issues, topics and concerns. This will (hopefully) be achieved by
bringing people together with a broad spectrum of ideas, ideals,
lifestyles and beliefs. Whilst you may not always agree with
others opinions on all issues, please respect the rights of
individuals to hold and express their point of view.

The RAMPART is open to all on the basis of equality for all.
However, people who do not believe in such equality regardless
of age, sex, race or religion etc. will not be welcome. Drug abuse,
drug dealing, or any activity detrimental to other peoples use of
the space, or local community, are not acceptable.

The RAMPART is a totally new project and the initial plans
have included setting up a free shop, community cinema, an art
gallery, painting studio and a free internet access. These ideas
have already been realised and further projects such as the cafe
are being developed,

There are plenty of other things that could be done. If you
have ideas and would like to get involved, please pop in for a

The RAMPART is run by an open collective as an
autonomous space and we aim to make desicions effecting the
project by concensus. If you’d like to participate, ask us
when the next meeting will be.
