The G8 Summits are where the heads of
state of the richest and most powerful
countries in the world - US, UK,
Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and
Russia - meet up every year on an infor-
mal basis to make sure the richest keep
getting richer at the expense of the rest
of us. The G8 leaders support illegal
wars, the destruction of the environ-
ment and the impoverishment of millions
of people.

On June 8th - 10th 2004, the G8 Summit
was staged on Sea Island, a private lux-
ury resort 80 miles south of Savannah in
the United States. This location was
specifically chosen by the G8 because it
is impossible for protestors to access
and so groups in the United States put
out a call for localised actions.

In Brunswick, Georgia, the closest city to
the summit, they overcame heat, toxic
soil, lines of riot police, and even a pre-
emptive state of emergency, but by the
end of Thursday 10th, groups opposing
the G8 Summit claimed victory in turning
the world's eye from the meeting on lav-
ish Sea Island to harsh reality faced by
some of the other six billion world resi-
Using creative props and actions,
activists marched against the costs of
the Iraq war, performed environmental
remediation for toxic soil created by
Brunswick factories, cleaned and
repaired run-down homes, and shared
stories of visits with Palestinian families
and their struggle to overcome a US
backed Israeli occupation of Palestinian

In San Francisco, activists organized a
counter-convergence called Reclaim the
Commons in solidarity with the Georgia
G8 protests as well as against the
Biotechnology Industry Organization
(BIO) convention; and a Reclaim The
Streets march.
Some of the other events that took place
against the G8 were, in Brunswick, a
four day-long Fair World Fair organized
by a broad coalition of regional and
national groups, with speakers, music,
food and fun; In Savannah, a rally, march
and festival for peace and civil liberties
organized by the Labor and Action
Research Project, featuring local,
national and international speakers,
music, theatre, and global information
exchange; An anarchist-inspired renova-
tion of houses and environmental
cleanup organized by G8 Fix Shit Up, to
show that resistance to the G8 global-
ization polices is possible through "con-
structive action." A free Palestine march
and sit-down demo in Brunswick on June
9th, ended in fifteen arrests. Six of the
arrestees were not released for several
weeks, by which time five of them had
been on a hunger strike for over a week.
Dissent is a new network, created to build
a mobilisation against the G8. The network
is based on the Peoples' Global Action
Hallmarks, rooted in local and autonomous
organising and action, and aims to go beyond
the G8. The PGA is a decentralised, non-
heirachical, global network of social movements,
