They told us the war in Afghanistan would have freed the women: three years
later, Afghan women are voting... while wearing the burqa! An image which is
the mirror of this country where daily life is one of religious, sexist
oppression and of US-NATO military occupation, of torture in the prisons, of
the rule of warlords and of drug trafficking. The helmsmen may have changed,
but the route is the same as before.
They told us the war in Iraq would have freed the Iraqis from dictatorship: two
years later, in the same prison where Saddam butchered his opponents, the US
invaders are torturing and humiliating prisoners, people are bombed to death in
Fallujah and the country is under the heel of fierce, greedy bosses. The
musicians have changed, but they playing the same old music.

Everyone has been able to see what war is, through the images of the thousands
of murderous attacks carried out every day in the name of "democracy and
freedom". The technological horror of antiseptic death at the hands of the
bombers and the ancient horror of mangled flesh, of bombed-out houses, of
torture and of rape. War. Without adjectives, without any of the shameful
hypocrisy of the humanitarian missions, without the indecency of a war of
civilization, a civilization which can be seen in the lifeless bodies of men,
women and children in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Amid all the slaughter are troops and military equipment bearing the Italian
flag, and only a few years ago Italian planes unleashed bombs on civilian and
military objectives in the Balkans...

>From 11th to 16th November 2004, at Venice's Lido, there will be a meeting of
the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, an event which is just one big farce (starting
with the name). NATO was born as a war machine - there is no credibility in
trying to pretend that the people running it are not generals and capitalists.

For this reason there will also be a march to demonstrate in a determined an
informative way not only against NATO but also AGAINST ANY MILITARY APPARATUS -
BE IT NATIONAL, EUROPEAN OR ATLANTIC.

A demonstration AGAINST THE MILITARY OCCUPATION OF SOCIETY AND OF TERRITORY,
from the Balkans to Afghanistan, from Iraq to Italy.

A demonstration AGAINST THE STATE OF WAR and its repressive consequences which
discriminate against the "internal opposition" (immigrants, workers who are not
downtrodden, opponents).

A demonstration which seeks to counterbalance the Atlantic Alliance and the
European Union with AN INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCE OF THE EXPLOITED.

THEIR WAR, OUR WAR

Let's look at the figures. Italian soldiers on duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and
the Balkans have a basic monthly wage of around 4,200 (for the lowest ranks),
not to mention the various benefits. On the other hand, a factory worker has a
basic monthly wage which rarely reaches 1,000. Since the beginning of their
operations in Iraq, the Italian forces have lost 19 soldiers; in Italy, 4 or 5
people die at work every day.
