This is a day for anarchists and radicals to be nice to each other when we
see each other on the street, in a cafť, at a show, or anywhere else. It
doesnít matter if youíre an activist, a punk, an academic, or even
a hippy. We all have a lot in common, so letís have one day a year
where we can at least show each other a minimum of human dignity and
respect. The solidarity of daily life is a huge part of that new world people
are always talking about. Ok, it sounds sappy. But it isnít. Itís
revolutionary fucking socializing that we need so we know we have the
potential to be more than a scene or abstract movement, that we can be a
loose community of common minded people. For just a little bit, letís
not take ourselves so seriously. Letís drop some of the patronizing
scenester competitions and name-dropping. Letís talk to that woman
in the band the same way we talk to the punk rock coffee guy. Sometimes
I think people who act like theyíre cooler than everyone else do it
because theyíre really afraid that they arenít cooler. Ooooh.
Whoís afraid? And people who are afraid that someone is too cool for
them, jesus, what kind of immature high school inequality is that? We all
canít be Kirk Cameron but we all, regardless of our faults or mistakes
or petty disagreements, are worthwhile human beings. This day is
nothing more than an excuse, and we donít have to talk to everyone,
just acquaintances from the scene. Címon, itís not a lot, but it
would be nice to know once a year that we have things in common, that
while we donít all have to love each other, that we can be civil.
Letís make a revolution where we never hear ďex-friends up
against the wall.Ē We wonít be free until the last tight shirted
hipster is cuddled up with the last situationist spouting grad student!
Hereís a practice dialogue.

ďHello. I know we donít have any mutual friends who got really
drunk last night and did something crazy like making out with a tree, but
I am a worthwhile person and you seem pretty alright too, so I thought I
would say, Hello. How are you? Great talking to you, take care until next
year.Ē
