June 2nd is Republic Day in Italy, a holiday which was re-introduced by
the Italian State 2 years ago to give uniformed murderers an occasion
to parade through the streets. This year in Piazza Castello, Turin -
declared a demilitarized zone for the occasion - it was planned to hold
an inauguration for a "Monument to Deserters", as part of the "Hide the
Shame of Militarism" campaign. However, the Turin police have decided
that this cannot be allowed: the demonstration had to be banned or, al
the very least, hidden away. Last Thursday, even though official
notification had not been lodged with police headquarters, an eager
functionary contacted us by telephone to announce that Piazza Castello
was banned to anti-militarists. So now we not only have "preventive
war", we also have "preventive bans"! When our comrades were called to
the police station, they were offered a somewhat "sheltered" (i.e.
impossible to find) square as an alternative to either Piazza Castello
or, in fact, any other square in the centre of the city where there
were likely to be any passers-by. The, a couple of days later, even
this generous offer was withdrawn in the morning, offered again in the
afternoon and once again withdrawn the following day. While this little
game was being played out, we announced our intention to demonstrate in
Piazza Castello, at which stage the police announced an official
warning for us not to.

A meeting was held on Tuesday evening at which we decided that on 2nd
June, not only would we declare Piazza Castello a de-militarized zone,
we would declare the entire city a de-militarized zone AND inaugurate
our monument to deserters. Where and when we please.

Our cities are full of monuments which commemorate uniformed murderers,
people who merit a statue for having killed, bombed, tortured, raped
and slit throats. These are the ruins on which "civilization" was

We will wipe out this shame from our history, from our memories, from
our future. Every 2nd June they would have us stand applauding at their
parades of death, at those who call murder "honour" and the borders
which separate humanity "fatherland". But we will not be there - we
have deserted their war, ripped up their flags, spit on the
barrack-house rhetoric. We know that armies are criminal, either with
or without a UN mandate: people die all the same, be it Iraq or Kosovo.
We have chosen to be men and women who stand on the side of the
oppressed, the exploited, the ones without a fatherland, the ones
without religion. The side of all those who believe that there is no
peace without justice.
