DAAA Collective conducted it's first Copwatch in downtown
Modesto this Friday. It was done in response to continued police
harassment, abuse, and attacks against youth, people of color,
and homeless. Police continue to harass homeless people in
Tower Park, long seen as the "homeless park". Driving up and
yelling through amplification that all people in the park must
leave it in 30 minutes after they finish whatever meal they are
eating. Of course if this where in any of the other parks happened
by largely middle and upper class people, this would not be an issue.
Also, recentally police tackled a unarmed African American man
who was standing at the bus stopping for spitting on the
sidewalk. Apperentally the man had allready been accussed of a
robbery, but was released soon after it was discovered he had no
connection to the crime.

The night downtown began very slowly, but soon we began to see
a large commotion between police and a group of latino youth.
Apperentally they group had been inside the local theater hanging
out in the lobby after watching a movie, and were playing video
games to pass the time. A secruity guard checked thier tickets,
and told them to leave. The group complained that they were
staying out of the cold, and asked why he wasn't checking anyone
else's tickets. The group was then escorted outside, and the
police then moved in to try and get them away from the theater's
overhang. A shouting match insued, and the group was told to
cross the street or be arrested. It was clear that the theater was
more concerned about having a large group of latinos hanging out
inside their establishment, than the fact that people weren't
watching films.

We also documented a routine citation for smoking by an
underage teen. When we asked for the officers cards when they
where finished, they refused and stated that they didn't have
cards. This of course is a lie. When we tried to write down one of
the officers name on his badge, he took his hand and covered it
up so we couldn't see. This is also a violation.

While we where video taping, one man came up to the police and
said, "Your time is running out mother fuckers. You got you all
on video, you can't hurt us anymore!" Copwatch flyers and know
your rights literature was also well received.

We'll be back!
