Hello friends! Here's Michal Tulik and Martin Horvath from Slovakia.
We are members of Priama akcia (IWA/AIT Slovakia) and Czechoslovak
anarchist federation - Slovakia (IFA). Perhaps you've heard about a
fresh students movement being formed in Slovakia. In this email we would
like to introduce you briefly with some details and ask you for your HELP.
Students strike committee (SVS) was formed on March 3th 2004 by students
of the biggest Slovak university Comenius University in Bratislava. Its
members are common students from whole Slovakia.
SVS is an apolitical grouping. We are not
politicians, we are not leaders. Our political views
differ but we are radical and want to keep it this
way. What brings us together is our interest in the
future of this society. We appeal to students as
well as non-students who feel the same interest to
join us. We think our struggle is not only about us.
It is also about people who will study universities
in years to come.

SVS demands the government to fulfil 8 demands. They

1. Keeping the university study tuition fees free.
2. Immediate earmarking 1 mld. Slovak crowns (25
mil. Euro) from state budget for universities.
3. Gradual rise of amount financial means from state
budget for universities so that they reach 1,33 % of
GDP in 2006.
4. Putting into practice a system of reallocation of
finances that reflects rather quality of schools
than number of studying students.
5. Rise of amount of financial means into social
system and an area pay out of benefits for
accomodation regarding to criteria of student's
education results and distance of place of
6. Keeping the present form of Student's loans fund.
7. Creating independent rating agency that will
evaluate quality level of study programs of
universities and faculties.
8. Making feedback and evaluation of quality of
study by students more effective.

SVS is a collective of students meeting together and
discussing the SVS future, strategies, activities
etc. Everyone is welcomed and each voice is equal to
anyone else's. Vast majority of decisions are
decided by consensus. The principle is that it's not
people who win in discussions - it's arguments. In
present situation when summer semester finishes SVS
meetings take place 1-2 times a week.

>From March 2004 till mid April several meetings at
faculties took place to organise people willing to
take part in SVS. On March 20th a meeting on SVS and
government reform was organised. Around 400-500
students took part. This meeting brought together
many new activiests. From 21st March to 4th May
preparations for organising a demonstration in
Bratislava went on with meetings of SVS collective
from 2 to 4 times a week. Thousands of posters and a
huge portion of enthusiasm of 20-40 people meeting
together all over the time (and many more helping
without presence at meetings) brought its fruit. On
May 5th SVS organised the biggest students
demonstration in Slovakia since 1989 with more than
1 000 university and high school students as well as
workers, pensioners and others in the streets of
Bratislava! (photos

Several other activites are planned for the future
from info stalls in the streets, to broadening of
SVS activities to the rest of Slovakia and the
world, speeches on university reform, improvement of
the website, summer activities, massmedia work,
improvement of organisational structure, collecting
finances for SVS activities from June to September,
and last but not the least - preparations for
students strike. Altough some of us wish also to put
pressure and hopes into opposition politicians,
essential principle remains the same - direct

If you have any questions or rather if you feel you
have experiences to offer (we bet you do!:)),
please, get in touch us as soon as possible!!! We
are building an activity which is a historical
memento in Slovakia. We do not want to repeat
mistakes of people who were in situation we are in
now. Let us know what are the main obstacles in
effective students struggle and how to keep the
movement alive (the semester is at the end and
summer is coming!). What would you suggest to us in
our struggle? What have you or students in your
country been through? Problems and solutions you
experienced? What are the "receipts" to quick
failure or on the other what things are effective
and work out well mostly? Also, let us know about
the details and main problems with education reform
in your country. We would like to exchange
information with you and compare it with what is
going on in Slovakia.

If you are interested in knowing more and helping us
in any way, please write to michal2lik@yahoo.com
(English) or martinh@csaf.cz (German).

This news is our personal activity and has nothing
to do with us being members of Priama akcia (IWA/AIT
Slovakia) and Czechoslovak anarchist federation -
Slovakia (IFA) and SVS Bratislava.

Thank you beforehand!

Michal Tulik and Martin Horvath
