The Mutual Aid Garden is a project that was started awhile back. It was
started by someone who also went on to be one of original members of the
Burning River Collective. It allows us to have a way to open up a space
to dialogue with folks in the working class neighborhood where it is
located. The conversations that are had with neighborhood folks are
almost always extremely political and covers topics like class, racism,
sexism, the war, capitalism, and the state. d.
The Mutual Aid Garden of Slavic Village has come under attack by the City
of Cleveland once again. The city has decided to accuse the Mutual Aid
Garden of trespass once again, even though we were given permission to
exist over 3 years ago by then mayor Mike White.

The Mutual Aid Garden was started in the spring of 2001 at 5406 Fleet
Ave. as a way to provide free organic food to the neighborhood. The
garden's existence also poses the question of where are our priorities.
Which is more important - to provide sustenance for a community or leave
a vacant property for the real estate business.

This is not the first time that the existence of the garden has been put
in peril. Not long after it was created a woman was discovered ripping
out plants. Her issue with the garden was that she disagreed with the
politics of the people who worked at it. She continues to harass the
garden to this day by calling the cops on the people working in the
garden and filing complaints to the city about it. The city also tried
to destroy the garden once before but was stopped by a strong showing of
support by the community for the garden. We saved the garden before and
we will do it again!

The city claims that we didn't get permission to use the property. This
is a lie. When Mike White was mayor he said that we had permission.
What is true is that while we did get permission, we didn't seek it. We
borrowed an old tactic from the labor movement of striking for
recognition and adapted it for community use. We say to the politicians
and bureaucrats - This is our community, not yours!

We are asking for your help. Without your support we may loose the
garden. We may even be arrested for the mere act of providing free food
for our community.

Please call and voice your support for the garden.
Let them know that you denounce these actions.

Also, contact us and let us know that you support the garden. We need to
know that we're not alone in this.
