C.L.A.S.H. is essentially made up of members of the local IMC
and FNB, a marriage that occured during and after the planning
of the Northeast Gathering for Autonomy (http://northeastautonomy.org)
which produced the North East Mutual Aid (NEMA) Network. We hope that
this group will fulfill the need for a radical/revolutionary group.
Pre-existing Hartford groups include Greens, Pro-Palestine
activists of all religions, Kucinich-style Democrats, "Working
Families" Party/ACORN, religious social justice groups such as
AFSC, the Men of Color Initiative, Catholic Worker, and general
peace groups like the CT Coalition for Peace and Justice and the
newly-formed Latinos Against the War (who rock). We are
friends and comrades with all of these people, as they are
dedicated and kind individuals, though they sometimes make it
difficult to be a radical voice. This is why we have formed.

Text from our first flyer:

C.L.A.S.H. is a collective of people from in and around Hartford
who think the only way things can ever really change is when we
work mostly outside the system and against it. “The
system” includes big business, oppressive relationships, and
all the different existing levels of government and hierarchy. In
short, domination. We believe in local autonomy, which means
independence of communities and individuals from any larger or
outside forces. Below is a basic explanation of how we think this
can be done, what we hope to see for a new world, and where
CLASH comes in.

-We believe Direct Action is the most effective tactic in achieving
our goals, which means to cut out the middle man, forget about
asking permission, and solve problems on your own terms.

-We practice and advocate Direct Democracy, which means that
people accept the right and responsibility to be equally involved in
all decisions which affect them in some way, instead of handing
over authority to others to make decisions for them.

-We understand everyday problems are caused by the way power
structures are set up, and no amount of voting for politicians and
signing petitions will ever make a real difference. But that
doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do. If we want a
new world, we have to build it today in the shell of the old. Things
like food cooperatives where food is shared and acquired cheaply
in bulk, workers collectives where work and profit are shared
equally, communal housing where residents collectively own
their buildings without a landlord, and neighborhood assemblies
where decisions are made by the people who live there, and
anything else you can think of that would build and expand local
autonomy is vital.

We want to be a resource to people who desire real change. We
have a vast collection of information on organizing and theory, as
well as a lot of experience in revolutionary projects. But we
cannot do it for you. No one can liberate you but yourself.
