On Tuesday, June 8th, a joint call for protest was made by West Coast
G8 and San Francisco Reclaim the Streets. SF-RTS called for a "mutant"
theme to help tie things into the biotech conference protests
happening at the same time. We all had expected a big turn-out for the
biotech protest based on numbers speculated by the biotech protest organizers
(Reclaim the Commons) and the corporate media. Numbers were expected to be 10
- 20,0000. Unfortunately, it seems only 200 people showed up. This reduced
momentum for our Anti-G8 action but we went ahead nonetheless.
People started showing up around 5PM at UN Plaza, directly across from
San Francisco's City Hall. Scouts reported that some 10 to 15 police
vans were encircling the area. Also there was a large white van with a
Department of Homeland Security emblem on it. A squadron of motorcycle
cops stood nearby. Local, state and federal police were also there.

Shortly after, with a soundsystem blaring NWA's Fuck the Police (the
LP version, not the more politically relevant EP version), we started
off on the sidewalk and then all busted out onto Market Street (a main
street in San Francisco), blocking rush hour traffic. Passers-by sang
along, shouting "fuck the police!" as columns of San Francisco cops
marched by.

Black bloc style actions began almost immediately. Police barricades
were pulled into the street. Newspaper boxes were kicked over and
dragged into the street.

However, shortly thereafter we were flanked on both sides by riot
police on foot and motorcycle police. We were followed by a caravan of
police vehicles.

We got totally surrounded near Carl's Jr around 5th & Market, where
only one year ago a full-on riot was taking place against the war in
Iraq, with protesters literally in charge of the streets and no cops
in sight. Cops appeared at all sides. They made an announcement that
we were all under arrest. Several indymedia volunteers and medics were
arrested. The police arrested almost 150 people and it took them 5
hours to do it.

These actions were in solidarity with protests happening in Georgia,
where the G8 summit was happening.

Many protesters are still in jail and reports of abuse are leaking out
through NLG and other legal support teams who are assisting.

All in all, it was an ok demonstration which allowed us to show
support for G8 protesters in Georgia. Because of the low numbers
attending the biotech conference, the G8 demo got even less numbers.
Now we must work on prisoner support to make sure people get out ok.
