A call out to contribute to 'Off the Radar, 30 years of Australian direct action.'
We are interviewing grass roots activists and searching for contributors
to attempt to document some of the many direct actions that have taken
place in Australia over the last 30 years. In doing so, we hope to
inform and inspire our current struggles with a richer understanding of
our past. Particularly, we will give priority to those struggles that
have been poorly covered and given little critical interrogation in
print. Those denied to us by limited coverage, or misrepresentation in the media.
What most interests us, is to identify those direct actions that
have shown the radical and revolutionary potential that exists in our
societies, and to open up cross struggle and cross-generational
communication. We hope to open up paths to re-evaluation, to generate
new visions, to create some shared language and points of
intersection and to stimulate discussions on ways forward.

Direct action is people taking back control over aspects of their
political, economic and social lives, and challenging the structures of
power which are imposed upon them. Actions that are not symbolic,
or that call on others, such as politicians and leaders, to act on our
behalf, but assume the ability of people to organise there own
lives free of the control others.

Actions such as blockades, pickets, squatting, sabotage, tree
spiking, lockouts, occupations, 'go slows' rolling strikes, or
distributing content via peer to peer internet networks without permission,
insurrections, slow downs, the revolutionary general strike.

It is also , establishing our own organisations such as food co-ops and
community access radio and tv to provide for our social needs as alternatives
to bureaucratic welfare models, blocking the freeway developments which
divide and poison our communities. In the forests, direct action interposes
our bodies, our will and our ingenuity between eco-systems and those who would
destroy them. It acts against the profits of the organisations which direct
the exploitation of nature and, in doing so, against those organisations
themselves. It is crossing borders illegally and refusing capitalisms
mechanisms for controlling our movement.

Direct Action is founded on the idea that people can develop the ability
for self rule only through practice, and proposes that all persons directly
decide the important issues facing them.

We are looking at various histories of resistance to find threads that can be
woven into a broader fabric of struggle for the future. We are currently
writing and taking submissions in the form of interviews, flyers, poetry,
photos and articles. If you would like to write or be interviewed, or if you
have any material, please send us an email or forward this on to others who
may be able to contribute.
