A lot has happened since the January 3 murder of Michael Newby by an
undercover Louisville Police Department narcotics officer. Michael Newby
was shot three times in the back by Officer McKenzie Mattingly, marking
the eighth fatal shooting of a black man in recent years. The police
claim that it was drug bust gone bad, that Newby pulled a gun on the
officer…but we all know better.
Since the shooting, a steady and constant wave of organized resistance
has sought to bring justice to the families and victims of police
terrorism. Permitted protests have continued every Sunday afternoon, as
they have since the last fatal shooting of James Taylor (who was shot
twelve times while handcuffed). Community forums and prayer vigils have
also taken place. Amidst all of the activity, on January 8th the stakes
of resistance were raised and people were forced to take immediate and
direct action against the Metro Louisville Police Department. An
impromptu and un-permitted snake march/street party erupted, that winded
its way around the city jail, and back to police headquarters, where
three windows were smashed out of the police chief’s office. That same
night the Chief of Police met with community activists at the Justice
Resource Center. It was obvious to most people that direct action got
results.

Wishing to continue the momentum after the events of Jan. 8th, activists
and people of color from the West End (the predominately black community
where most of the shootings have taken place) are organizing and calling
for creative direct action to confront the true power structure of the
city, to take place on February 21. We will demand justice for Michael
Newby and all victims of police terror.

Locally, anarchists and anti-authoritarians are attempting to become
true allies in the struggle for justice in this city. We believe that
the anarchist movement must work to build trust and long-term
relationships with affected communities. There is much to be learned and
gained from people who are truly confronted by the forces of capitalism
every single day of their lives. As anarchists who are against the
racism and the state, we feel that it is necessary that we support them,
and are asking for support from the greater anarchist community.
Therefore, we are inviting anarchists and anti-authoritarians to
Louisville, Kentucky on February 21 to participate in a contingent
during the direct actions.

OUR WAR IS IN THE STREETS! FIGHT POLICE TERRORISM!

For housing and orientation purposes, we are asking groups wishing to
participate to please contact:
