Between 11 and 13th February 2005, Projectile, a major festival of Anarchist
Film, Culture and Thought will take place in Newcastle Upon Tyne. For details
of our films, workshops and cabaret night, go to: http://www.projectile.org.uk
As part of Projectile, the Organising Collective will be hosting Anarchists in
Academia’s first conference – on Friday 11th February between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The Anarchists in Academia conference will be held at the nearby University
of Sunderland (City Campus) – in room B6 of the Priestman Building (see
http://welcome.sunderland.ac.uk/contactus.asp?uid=317019734
for location/travel details).
The conference is free (though we might pass the hat round for donations
from waged delegates on the day) and open to all who might have an interest
in further and higher education issues – be they students, researchers,
lecturers, independents. There is no need to register – just turn up.
For anyone planning to stay overnight – and please do stay for the rest of
the Projectile festival – cheap hostel accommodation can be found at:
Newcastle YHA hostel
107 Jesmond Road
Phone: 0870 770 5972
Bookable online:
http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/hostelpages/69.html
B&B accommodation is also available in Newcastle and Sunderland – for
example at:
http://northumbria.ac.uk/static/5007/hotels.pdf
though you should book early as the Labour Party Spring conference also
takes place in Newcastle that weekend (grrrr...)
Content and Format
Following on directly from the Bookfair session we have identified 4 themes
and sessions for the day:
10.00 – Brief organiser’s introduction
10.10 – 11.20 – The Labour Process in Higher Education (perhaps looking at
issues around quality systems, managerialism and job insecurity)
11.40 – 1.00 – Researching Theory and History in Anarchism (ideas, networks,
problematics, resources)
1.0 – 2.00 – Dinner
2.00 – 3.20 - Research and Activism – how do they/could they influence each
other?
3.40 – 5.00 – Libertarian Pedagogy
We would like to leave the format of the individual sessions open to
participants, assuming that they will something of a workshop style.
However if anyone would like to do a short introduction (perhaps setting out
a perspective on the topic), they should contact us via the @ists in
Academia list.
Similarly, if anyone has any useful resources relevant to the 4 sessions
above (readings, web links etc.), please get in touch.
