Note: NEFAC* has endorsed and is participating in the campaign to return Mohamed
Cherfi to Canada. Our Quebec-region section worked with him in the no-borders
struggle (he is an active organizer with the non-status algerian committee in
Montreal). Please take the time to read this email, forward it, and send a postcard.
> Hello, As you no doubt know, Mohamed had an interview yesterday with Immigration
Canada as part of the procedure involving the application for group
sponsorship. The Canadian authorities are hard-pressed to ignore our long
months of pan-Canadian solidarity. But their acknowledgment could not be
less certain. We must continue to firmly express our determination to have
Mohamed brought back here safely, perhaps more than ever as the Holiday
Season draws near. We ask that you distribute the postcard
(http://mohamedcherfi.org/IMG/pdf/Carte_postale.pdf ) to be signed and
sent to Minister Sgro. Feel free to contact the minister (Tel.: (613)
992-7774; Fax: (613) 957-2688; E-mail: minister@cic.gc.ca et
Sgro.J@parl.gc.ca).

News about the interview
On Friday, December 10, Mohamed was interviewed by a person in charge of
immigration services at the Canadian Consulate in Buffalo. The interview
lasted two hours. The person who interviewed Mohamed affirmed that he
would receive the federal government’s decision concerning his
application for residence before January 7. We have no way of knowing
whether that decision will be positive or negative. However, we ask that
the decision be made as soon as possible, as there is little time left
before the U.S. authorities rule on Mohamed’s appeal and are able to
deport him to Algeria.

If the federal government’s decision is positive, the Canadian
authorities will then have to carry out medical and criminal checks before
issuing a visa to Mohamed, to say nothing of reaching an agreement with
the U.S. authorities for his repatriation to Canada. If the federal
government’s decision is negative, Quebec has jurisdiction to study
Mohamed’s
application for residence, but a federal visa must still be obtained. That
is why we are asking the Canadian authorities to move very swiftly. We
have to keep up the pressure to that end.

Solidarity donations
A big, big THANK YOU to all of you who answered our October 29 call for
solidarity donations! We exceeded our objective of $6000. To date, the
Mohamed Cherfi fund has received $7337 (part of it raised at two public
events)! Through your generosity, we have been able to cover
Mohamed’s legal fees and support costs. With the remainder, and the
anticipated contributions from a number of organizations, we hope to
defray future expenses.

Postcards
A big THANK YOU as well to everyone who printed postcards and had people
sign them. The thousands of cards sent in recent months have shown the
authorities that there is widespread popular support for Mohamed’s
repatriation to Canada. We must continue our efforts more than ever. In
Montreal and Quebec City, we are now able to provide postcards to people
who want to hand them out at public events, at the workplace, etc. Contact
us ahead of time at solimo2004@yahoo.fr, or at (418) 262-0144.
